Biografía del autor
Chip Bearden learned to fly sailplanes (high-performance gliders) in 1965, at age 14, from his father, and has been flying and competing ever since, with almost 3,000 hours of time in the cockpit. He has flown some of the longest tasks ever called in U.S. competition; won at the local, regional, and national levels; been a director and vice chairman of the Soaring Society of America; and is widely respected for his writings and talks on safety in this sometimes-perilous sport. He has also run 46 marathons since 1978, including three trips to the Boston Marathon. A retired business executive, he has been published online and in print, including in The New York Times. He is the father of successful twin daughters (28) and was their stay-at-home parent for almost five years following their birth. This is his first book.
Descripción del libro
An insecure 14-year-old boy learns to fly sailplanes (gliders) as a way to emerge from the shadow of his all-American father, who is also his flight instructor. Over the next 15 years, his improbable success in the high-stress world of sailplane racing provides the self-assurance to build a life enrichened by career, sport, and love. Then, a violent crash on the day of what should have been his greatest triumph in the cockpit threatens everything. Now he must recover and rebuild, rising above fear, failures, and tragedies to achieve success in life once again, while redefining what that means. Can he be at peace with the man he has become…or will he be forever haunted by what he had—and lost?
Público al que se apunta
This book has two target audiences. First are aviation enthusiasts (heavily male, 40+ or even 50+ and older, in the U.S. and other countries where soaring is popular--e.g., UK, Canada, Germany, France, Poland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, especially those interested in sport aviation. It's a memoir heavily focused on sailplane competition and the challenges, rewards, and hazards (including death) thereof. A second audience are general interest readers. The ambitious model I've had in mind for many years is "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer, who used mountain climbing as a platform to tell an insightful adventure story involving the pursuit of lofty goals, commitment, perseverance, courage, failure, death, heroism, and reflections on life that appealed to climbers and non-climbers alike. To date, this audience seems to skew towards women of all ages who enjoy reading about experiences in settings unlike theirs that speak of adventure, coming of age, and triumphs over adversity.

The designer is awesome - this is our second project together. Antony was lightning quick on a project that didn't have a lot of notice. I'd work with him again in a heartbeat.
