ABOUT THE BACK FORTY (& SPECIAL CONTEXTUAL NOTE FOR NON-USA PARTICIPANTS)
"The Back Forty" is a term that has a dual meaning. One the one hand, in the southern US, and particularly in Texas, the term "the back forty" has been used for hundreds of years to refer to the uncultivated forty acres of land behind the ranch that has infinite growth potential. If you ever saw the television show "Dallas" you would hear the characters refer to "the back forty".
This term is being used in our business and in the title of this book as a metaphor for the back forty years (vs. acres) in a person's life as having the same infinite growth potential, meaning anything is possible, they can be or do anything they want, and there are no limits.
So, it's important that the images and cover represent a "radical", playful, passionate and purposeful second half of life with unlimited potential, NOT FOLKS WHO ARE RETIRING OR SLOWING DOWN. We want images that imply people are living RADICALLY, not typically. ;-)
Though we don't require that the cover make reference to any western/ranch ideas of "The Back Forty", you should know what that double meaning stands for. And it might be interesting if some ideas gently try to make this metaphorical connection in the imagery, though definitely not all-out western or ranch-based.
What's most critical, though, is that the idea of a "radical" second half of life is represented in the imagery.
