Público al que se apunta
-Esmé, 43 years old
-Full-time program manager at the Asian Pacific Islander Wellness Center
-9 months in current role, with the organization for 11 years
-She works here because she loves it—may or may not have official training, but she does know what she’s doing on a technical level
-Daily responsibilities include showing up for all manner of crises from every direction: staff showing up late, facilities over-crowded and under-resourced, community members demanding services, supervisors needings reports, etc.
-Every day, she’s serving many different masters
-The best thing about her job: She feels she’s making a difference
-The worst thing about her job: She feels unprepared, overwhelmed, and burnt out
-She wants: to be so good to her people without sacrificing herself anymore. She wants this book to help her make some magic.
-She needs: more support for herself so she can better support others
She’s afraid of: having to decide between short-changing her team or being burnt out herself. She’s afraid she’ll have to leave because she’ll have nothing more to give.
She believes: that sacrifice is necessary to show up, she thinks she’s doing a good job only if she’s losing herself in the process
Esme is not a social worker or a trained clinician. She may be an MPH, she may have worked her way up through the organization learning as she went. She has not received formal training as a manager.
