Descripción del libro
The novel is told from the perspective of two (seemingly) different women: Alma Carneggio, wife of an Italian industrial aristocrat, and Helen Kings, a hard-working single mum living in London.
Alma’s world falls apart when her only son Luca, starts drifting from the family and then fathers an illegitimate child - Helen's daughter Emmy. Helen is forced to keep her distance from the family to avoid a scandal. Short after Emmy's birth, Luca dies in a mysterious car accident. Despite the ban, Helen sends Alma a picture of Emmy every year, as a reminder of their existence. Seventeen years later, when her husband dies from a heart attack, Alma finally writes to Emmy.
Helen, to the outside world a functioning working mom, equally dwells on memories and blames Alma for her loneliness. Alma’s letters to Emmy after so many years are an affront to her. She hides them, despite Emmy’s desire to learn about her father.
It takes a new friend for Alma and a new love for Helen, to make both realize that their struggle for social acceptance has harmed their loved ones. They realize: The road to redemption, after all those years, still lies with the other.
When Emmy discovers the letters, she runs away. Alma and Helen finally team up to find Emmy.
