Descripción del libro
That day in 1940 changed everything for ten-year-old Jim. Coventry smouldered on the horizon, neighbours were missing, and faces were grim all around. It was the day when family and community collided, a time of confusion and recrimination, of choices that would echo for a lifetime. Jim Brown plays in the park on Sundays, whatever anyone says. His father is a militant socialist who makes surgical boots in his garden shed, his sister struggles with polio as she distributes pacifist leaflets, and his brother refuses to fight. When the Luftwaffe comes and public opinion shifts behind the war effort, social expectation comes knocking . When the Luftwaffe comes and public opinion shifts behind the war effort, social expectation, and conflicting loyalties take Jim down a fateful path.

Necesidades de diseño
A traditional design/palette featuring the protagonist and aspects of his environment (English market town in November 1940, Luftwaffe bombers etc.) might work but could look outdated and it would be difficult to finding images that are accurate in detail to time and place. Probably more effective, would be a more modern graphical/silhouette design that captures the boy wrestling with the pressures that are shaping his life. Perhaps something that represents/interprets of the title ('The Birds that do not Sing' is a metaphor - see my explanation on message page for context) Examples I really like of this style of cover are 'The Water Seeker' by Kimberly Willis Holt and 'A Teaspoon of Earth end Sea' by Dina Nayeri - see files. Worth noting that a key character in the book is a concrete elephant who the protagonist uses as an imaginary confidant (see files and messages). Also bird imagery might be effective in such a cover e.g. birds on a wire - though it probably wouldn't work to have birds and an elephant together. It might also be worth noting that the protagonist has a mind for facts, and machinery that dominates his view of the world, growing up as he is in a family of engineers. On the modern graphical theme it is worth noting that the story is told in two time frames - one the young boy, and the other, the character at 85 years old reflecting on what happened - this dual aspect to the protagonist might lend itself to a modern cover. See 'An American Marriage' by Tayari Jones.
Lo que debe evitarse
There is a danger of creating a design that tries to do too much and ends up crowded with images, or using images that are not accurate to the time and place.
