OVERALL: be creative. This contest is open to any and all ideas. Below are general guidelines and thoughts, but please don't feel limited.
DESIGN AND STYLE: The cover should have clear, bold, open, and inviting fonts. The style should be simple. No image is necessary if the title itself can be iconic. The title should stand out noticeably, maybe even occupying much of the page. The words "the" and "of" might be in all lowercase, and the other words ("AWAKENING...WASHINGTON'S CHURCH") might be in all uppercase. The title could also be left justified or interestingly arranged (rather than centered) depending on the design. The subtitle can be included if it fits. No particular color scheme is required.
POTENTIAL IMAGE: A basic image or two might be woven in. Possibilities include a cross, a sunrise, light, sun through clouds, or something growing. Another cool idea would be a faint cross (shadowy or light) somehow overlaying the cover. Open to any ideas for illustration--i.e., a bold, hand-crafted feel. There could also be texture, like broad brush strokes. Most important: the image and/or texture should not detract much from the simplicity of the cover.
SAMPLES: The attached images offer a few ideas of the style. I've also pinned some other cool covers here: https://www.pinterest.com/jbsimmons…ver-ideas/. But again, these are just ideas. Your best creative ideas are absolutely welcome and encouraged.
AVOID: please don't include a profile of George Washington's head, a church building, a random steeple, anything too old and dusty looking, too much frill.
OTHER BASICS: the book will be 5.25 x 8 inches, and around 250 pages. The cover should have a front, spine, and back. The author's name should go near the bottom. The placeholder for the back blurb text is in the background info. The attached image of a bishop's hat could go at the base of the spine, where a publisher's emblem typically goes.
