There are no design elements in the book that need to be carried onto the cover. In fact, we may take design elements from the cover and use them in the book front matter. Short synopsis: The core message of the book is that Learning & Development (L&D) personnel face an urgent challenge to help their organisations survive the impact of fierce competition and recessionary forces by boosting their employees’ performance capability. The purpose of this book is to emphasise the urgency of the challenge, the reasons why L&D must change, and to show how it can be achieved by enhancing the informal learning that takes place in an organisation. Informal learning in the workplace plays a far greater role than formal learning, and hence there is a need for learning and development professionals to change the way they do things. The ‘Background’ spread over the first two chapters describes the current situation. The ‘Plan’ (the rest of the chapters) specifies what L&D must do to accomplish the challenge (including enhancing the learning system that already exists in the organisation). The book contains many examples and case studies from around the world. For many in the learning/training/development field, the concept of informal learning is new thinking that they are likely to be aware of but have not yet understood the full implications for them and their job role. The reaction required on sight of the cover is “I heard about this. I need to get that book and find out more.” The primary purpose of the book is to create credibility for the author and the company within the primary target audience. Audience: Target audiences in order of priority 1. Learning & Development professionals in medium to large organisations 2. Human Resource people in any organisation 3. Consultants in the L&D and HR field 4. Operational and Chief Executives, and senior managers The primary target audience of L&D professionals is about 65% women. Age is usually 35+ and usually with a degree level education. The primary market will be in the UK, but the book will also be available worldwide via Amazon and other online booksellers. Marketing: The book will be sold at trade show stands, and online via SoMe, landing pages, and via Amazon and other online bookstores. Therefore the cover must look OK and have a readable title at thumbnail size on a white background. It must also look good when in a stack on a trade show table. A quality feel to the book when picked up is important so it is likely a laminate will be applied to the cover to give it a silky feel. Spot UV could also be used if it makes sense to do so. A photo of the author has deliberately not been supplied. Please use a photo of a middle aged male in a format/style that suits the design. We will do a photo-shoot to create an equivalent format/style photo.
