BACKGROUND & MOOD
I'm self-publishing an international edition of my book that was originally published by Random House New Zealand under the title 'Moon Over Martinborough'. The new title is 'An Olive Grove at the Edge of the World'.
The book has three core elements: fun, peace, and beauty.
It's about learning how to take care of an olive grove, how take care of animals, and finally, it's about the kindness of the local community. It's full of gratitude and humor.
It's a light read and I want the cover to express that. Some have compared it to David Sedaris (#fanboy #iamnotworthy).
Much of the book is about how beautiful the place is. Can you get beauty and humor together? I did in the book, so if you can in the cover that would be amazing.
The most likely paperback dimensions are 6x9, although there's a small chance it could be 5.25 x 8.
No photos. Illustrations only, please. The cover illustrations should include olive trees (or olive branches around the edges, or some such thing). Ideally I'd also like animals: chickens, a sheep (or two?), a cow (or two?), and a kunekune sow. Kunekune pigs are are hairy. Maybe hills in the distance behind the olive grove. Not a farmyard scene.
That's a lot there so if you can't get all that in, I'm open to ideas.
Think: David Sedaris Tries to Be an Olive Farmer. His covers are odd and quirky and fun.
The original cover is attached and here: https://jaredgulian.com/
The animal stories are a huge part of the book. The challenge for this cover is to include animals if you can but not to make it feel like a kids’ book.
Here are some pics of our dearly departed pet pig, Lucy, a kunekune sow. Just so you know this isn’t your typical storybook pink farm pig. She plays a small role in the book and enters in about 2/3rds of the way into the book. So if you can include an image of her that's fantastic, but she's not central.
Fonts which reflect the book are playful, beautiful, adventuresome, fun, and hand-crafted.
Example links below of what I like, although feel free to try others. It's important to me that the title is readable in the thumbnail on Amazon, so these might not work.
Here are some covers I like:
This is the right idea but too Mediterranean and no farm animals: https://www.bookscovered.co.uk/prod…live-grove

THE OLIVE GROVE
The olive grove is absolutely central to the book. In the book I describe the olive grove this way:
We stood under the wisteria-covered pergola and looked out at the view.
In front of us there were clusters of lavender, leading out to grassy paddocks. In the middle distance a line of massive, dark green macrocarpa trees framed a view of the large bottom paddock and some willow trees. CJ told me that beyond the willows there was a trout stream. Across the river we could see a horizon of green hills sprinkled with tiny white dots – sheep – and topped with two noble pine trees side by side. In the middle of all of this, right at the heart of everything – between the top paddock and the tall macrocarpas – stood an absolutely gorgeous olive grove of 500 trees. CJ was right. This was paradise.
This is what our olive grove looks like, so you get the idea:
Here's our house, although it’s not necessary on the cover. But you see it's not an Italian farm house.
I'm uploading the file. Please on the spine just use the image of the pony, not the text next to it.
I'm aware I've talked about a lot on the cover. You'll use your good design skills to boil it down. I'm open to ideas for how to convey it. Remember, it's mostly about olives and chickens.
What's non-negotiable is that the cover must convey: Olives & Animals, Beauty & Fun.
