Descripción del libro
As long as Emberlynn can remember she has dreamed about her past; the problem is, she has very little memory of it. Her only clues are a silver key she wears on a chain around her neck and the recurring nightmares of dark shadows in a dense fog. In her waking life, Emberlynn is Princess of Ardia, and is set to inherit the throne from her father. Unfortunately, in order to do so she must marry. Running from the prospect of an arranged marriage to a man she doesn’t trust, Emberlynn leaves home, disguising herself as a commoner. Riddled with questions about her past and her future, Emberlynn goes looking for answers. What she finds is a plot to overthrow her kingdom, a world of magic she never knew existed, and somewhere along the way, herself.
Público al que se apunta
The target audience is readers aged 12-20, primarily female but I'd like to try to appeal to male readers as well. It is a YA fiction fantasy, but typically the readership for YA extends into the 20s. For reference, I am 30, and the book appeals to myself and many of my friends.

Necesidades de diseño
The print version of the book is going to be an 5.5x8.5 paperback. I would like the design to have an ethereal, enchanting, magical sort of feel to it. The color schemes I am drawn to are greens and blues- cool tones. I don't mind other colors being featured in the design, but I'd like the overall color, background, etc. to lean cooler. There are two different directions I am picturing for the design, and I am open to designs for both/either. One of them would be imagery from the book on top of a solid colored background (or maybe one with some filigree or design)- something like a skeleton key or a castle. This direction would be simple and clean and easily readable, but fun, bold and creative. (Very loosely inspired by the ebook cover redesign that Olly Moss did for Harry Potter in 2016.)The other direction I am picturing would be a realistic illustration of the main character (who is a classically pretty 18 year old girl with long, platinum blonde hair, and bright blue eyes.) One thing I would definitely want if I go this direction would be for her to be holding a silver skeleton key in her hand (either by itself, or on a necklace chain) or for it to be prominently featured and visible on a chain around her neck. (Skeleton key is a term for an old vintage key with an intricate handle, and has nothing to do with bones or actual skeletons.) At one point in the book she wears a dark green ball gown with gold accents. In another, she wears a more form-fitting and flowing midnight blue gown with sparkles that catch the light as if they are stars. One possible thought on the illustration direction would be for the night-sky dress to flow into the sky itself, and perhaps that deep, sparkling blue background surrounds a white or light-colored image of a castle behind her (possibly her hair could be illustrated as so blonde it's almost white, and that hair could feed/flow/transition into a castle silhouette) under bright stars. Not set on that, it's just one thought on that direction. There is also an ivy-covered cottage in the story and she spends time traveling and in nature. Even just an illustration of her with a colored or abstract background might work.
Lo que debe evitarse
The one thing I really do not want on any design is for it to be muddled or difficult to read. I want it to be clean and crisp and easy to see, so not too may details or pieces that it becomes difficult to see what's going on. I would prefer to steer away from any real-life pictures of people or places. I also do not want any of the illustrations to look overly cartoonish. Nothing too ominous or dark- the book has some suspenseful and dark moments, but overall it has a lighter feel to it.
