Paperback book cover, including front/spine/back. Inviting freedom and creativity, but there are some basic requirements.
This book is a baby/pregnancy wellness book. It is playful, while warning of the negative outcomes related gestational and childhood vitamin D deficiency. While the author uses humor in many places throughout the book, it is a serious book, warning of pregnancy loss and unfavorable disease outcomes such as autism and certain birth defects, as well as increased disease risk for type 1 diabetes, MS, and Crohn's disease, by way of example. The book is well-referenced, hence somewhat scholarly (but a fun read). I will attach the Forward of the book so the designer to get a flavor of its content and my writing style, which is a conversational style of writing. The front cover will need to be warm and inviting, conveying a sense of health and happiness, such as seen in images of a healthy, happy mother interacting with a healthy, happy baby. Boy or girl?--designers choice. (Although I am not strictly opposed to a font-only book cover, an image cover would attract me the most.) A playful font (not silly) would appear suitable. As far as specific requirements . . .
Book size cropped to 6 x 9 inches. Spline width approx. 0.4 inches, perhaps a little wider as I may later add an 8 page or so Index.
- Space will be needed at top and bottom to accommodate drop-in-later-text, such Advance Review Copy on the top, and Forward by "Whomever" near the bottom. (Not to be added at this point in time.) However, a solid band of color can be placed at the bottom, to be filled in later once the author has obtained a forward and knows the individuals name.
-The authors name, Eugene, L, Heyden, RN, should appear preferably in a lower portion of the cover, above a space reserved for "Foreword by . . . " That being said, the author's name can be placed elsewhere if the design dictates.
-Of course, a space reserved for "Over a Million Copies in Print" at the upper right-hand corner of the cover would be nice (I can dream, right?)
-Theme colors: The author likes happy colors, warm and inviting. Text needs to stand out and grab the customers attention.
-Title and authors last name (Heyden) should be included.
-In the upper two-thirds to three-quarters of the back cover, depending on the space requirements for About the Author (including a picture of the author) and an area reserved for the price/website/bar code, this upper space will be reserved for "Words of Praise for Mommy, Me, and Vitamin D." A bordered area reserved for this would seem appropriate. The price/website/bar code will be dropped in later.
-If a designer chooses, the area reserved for "Words of Praise . . ." could be populated with "fake" words of praise in a dummy text (e.g., Lorem Epsum . . . ), perhaps faint, perhaps with an overriding banner placed at an angle which reads "Your comments here."
-A selection of pictures of the author will be attached for the designer to play with. The first two picture attachments are favored, one in color and one in B&W. It is preferred that the picture be placed at the left of About the Author.
-About the Author should read: Eugene L. Heyden, RN is practicing registered nurse with a wide variety of clinical experiences. His passions include medical research and patient education. He has written for you a great little book.
