The book will measure 5 x 7.75 inches.
I am reasonably open to the design concept; I am just looking for something elegant and intriguing to entice the potential reader. The puzzles have some humour sprinkled throughout, but the focus is their enjoyable and thought-provoking nature. They took many hours to write. While some of them could be solved very quickly, others might take 30 minutes or 1 hour or longer(!) of serious thought.
The message I would like the book to send is 'This is not your typical puzzle book. These puzzles are well worth your time, and should you attempt them, you will enjoy them and become a better mathematician in the process'. The blurb will contain aspects of this in text, but it would be fantastic if the cover design helped get this message across (somehow!).
The title 'Elastic Numbers' comes from one of the puzzles, in which I define a new type of number called an 'elastic' number. The word elastic, and its association with an actual physical material, should NOT be used as inspiration for the cover design.
The cover should be easy on the eye, not loud or garish, and may incorporate mathematical elements (numbers, symbols, shapes etc) if it helps to make the design more attractive. Any artwork should be original.
It should appeal to anyone aged 10 and over who is interested in solving puzzles, but in particular school pupils and their parents, who are looking for exciting mathematics typically not found in the standard curriculum. It should also appeal to educational establishments who might like to purchase a copy to supplement their resources.
