Book cover for a 6x9 paperback book titled How to Keep HR from Being the Employee Complaint Department. The book's objective is to help human resource professionals recognize how their own behavior in getting involved in too many "employee drama" issues is actually causing part of the problem. Also, that supervisors and managers are simply not doing their jobs in handling employee issues. Therefore, employees feel like they have to go to someone in HR who will "listen" to them... I will provide details in my book regarding how to recognize "Dysfunction Junction" which is current organizational culture that is enabling this lack of leadership, how HR professionals are too involved in employee issues that they really don't own... and that they must implement changes in organizational policy, procedures, and implement leadership training to help supervisors be more effective in resolved in employee issues--before they get out of control and HR has to get involved. I am envisioning a cover that shows somewhat of an overwhelmed, exasperated HR Manager who is dealing with yet another "difficult" employee issue, struggling to keep up with a workload, struggling to get out of the office on time, etc. Typical HR professionals who handle employee relations' in the U.S. are female, between ages of 30-50, so any images should be female, as also the human resource management profession in the U.S. is 85% female. A perfect cover image will have a female professional woman, sitting behind her desk, or sitting adjacent to an employee in a conference room, conversing. If another visual can show employees somewhat standing in line outside the HR department, to show the sheer volume of complaints awaiting the poor HR manager, that would be ideal!
Human resource management is a people-driven profession, so the use of people images will be essential. Color palette used should be appealing to the U.S. female demographic, age 30-45, and professionals who usually have at least a Bachelor's degree. Female image should appear to be Caucasian or Caucasian/Hispanic as this is the biggest ethnic demographic within the profession. I've included some images to give a sense of what the day-to-day frustration is like for most HR professionals... They have a ton of work on their desks handling payroll, benefits, recruiting, hiring, training, orientations, etc. and often they can never seem to keep up with their workload, as they always have "5 people deep" at their doors, waiting to come in and complain. Issues employees complain about are scheduling issues, co-worker problems, balance of workload and supervisors who don't hold people accountable, supervisors they "can't" talk to so they run to HR, etc. In other words, HR deals with a ton of employee drama, a lot of which they just don't own, but wind up dealing with because supervisors aren't engaging with their employees. If the cover art can somehow include some humor/cartoon, it would be great! Most HR professionals do have a pretty good sense of humor, as they hear a lot of stories every single day from employees. The images I've uploaded I am not suggesting get used, but rather I've provided these to offer some artistic/creative guidance.
