Dying to Win: How to Inspire and Ignite Your Child's Love of Learning in an Overstressed World
Teri Capshaw is a homeschooling mother and former journalist on a mission to help families overcome limitations imposed by an overstressed world. When they're not living abroad, Teri and her husband, Jesse, call rural Idaho home. They have four children. Connect with her at tericapshaw.com.
From the back cover: Is fear of failing your child academically holding your family hostage? Are you grasping for ways to ensure your children will learn what they need to compete in a global economy? Is homework dominating your family life? Are you worried the education you provide for your children won’t be good enough? Author Teri Capshaw understands the burdens parents carry all too well. The truth is even in some parts of the world where students ace international tests families still struggle. Dying to Win exposes the dark side of a culture where “cramming” is taken to a new extreme, academic pressure kills the love of learning for many, and some students are pushed to the brink of suicide. Because it’s clear “more of the same” won’t help, Teri shares a radically different approach. Through interviews and insights she reveals what makes kids from successful homeschool families excel. Discover today the seven steps you can take to inspire and ignite a love of learning in your children.
This book is written for parents concerned about their children's educations. The primary audience will be based in the US, however, the possibility of translating into Traditional Chinese for sale in Taiwan will be explored.

I need one non-fiction book cover designed. The winning designer will be considered for follow-up books in the future. On the front cover I need the title in the middle with the largest font: Dying to Win. The subtitle needs to also incorporated into the design: How to Inspire and Ignite Your Child's Love of Learning in an Overstressed World. The foreword should also be mentioned on the front cover: Foreword by Sam Sorbo. This book cover will come in two versions: paperback 5.5 x 8.5 inches (Create Space specs) and hardcover case laminate 5.5 x 8.5 inches (Ingram publishing specs). Their websites have the correct dimensions, bleed, etc. I want you to have creative freedom with the design. That said I do have a few ideas in terms of a direction. An important element is that the book cover communicates both a serious problem indicated by the title (the first chapter details suicides apparently caused by academic pressure in Singapore, Hong Kong, and China) and hope conveyed in the subtitle. Idea #1: Title written on brick wall. Bricks knocked out below the title to reveal blue sky with the subtitle written in the blue sky. Idea #2: Imagery using a balcony on a tower. Maybe contrasted with a bright park scene, sky, or bright plants. (I don't want to get too literal or morbid, but kids who committed suicide in the book did so by jumping off of balconies.) I will include a picture of a balcony from a school in China where bars were added to prevent student from committing suicide. Please note that you cannot use that photo, it is simply providing as a visual to help you generate ideas. Idea #3: An abstract cover similar to the style of those used on Andy Stanley books, but with logical imagery for an educational book. Please note that I'm not asking you to replicate these sample book covers, merely providing a sample of creative covers I find appealing. AAE logos below are for the back cover and spine.
What to avoid
I don't want any clear pictures of people on the cover such as students. If you have an amazing idea feel free to try it, but know I'm likely to avoid using a cover with children on it due to the reference to suicide in the cover title. While I want the book cover to have a serious tone fitting to the nature of the subject I don't want it to be depressing.
