I want both ebook and paperback covers designed for my trilogy (3 books). I prefer clean, non-fussy, uncluttered designs.
- Cover design
- Delivery of both a high and a low res version of the front cover for digital books (ebooks)
- Delivery of a full spread (front cover, back cover and spine) for the paperback versions of the books
- Book dimensions for the paperback version: 5.25” x 8” (13.335 x 20.32 cm)
Just to be clear, this contest is for the first book cover, but the winner needs to have a design that can be adapted for the next two.
The book title: Recoil (second book: Rebel)
Author: Joanne Macgregor
Logline: The Game is real.
The books comprise a Young Adult Dystopian Romance trilogy, and I would like designs for the three books that are similar enough to give the series brand recognition, but different enough that it doesn't just look like a color change each time. It would be good to have a symbol of similar motif that could be repeated across the three books.
I need the first book's cover immediately, but I need the second cover soon so it can go on preorder, and I would ideally like all three covers designed by the same artist.
I am not wedded to any particular design and am happy to check out all ideas, but I do NOT want:
- that awful cheap, amateurish self-published photoshop look,
- sexualization of my lead (female) character (no "tits and ass" with a gun)
- a glorification of violence
- heavy military or guns imagery as I think this alienates most female readers
- pink, girly images which would alienate male readers
Back copy for the book:
“In this war, it's not about them, it's about us. It's about what we're prepared to do, who we're prepared to become.”
It is three years since a series of terrorist attacks flooded the US with lethal disease-infected rats and human virus-bombs, and society has changed radically.
Sixteen year-old Jinxy James spends her days trapped at home – immersed in a virtual reality gaming world, worrying about the plague and longing for freedom. Then she wins the war simulation game and is recruited into The Academy, a top-secret organisation where talented teenagers are trained to become agents in the war on terror. Eager to escape her mother’s smothering over-protectiveness and to serve her country, Jinxy begins bootcamp and rapidly becomes an expert sniper of infected rats.
She’s immediately drawn to Quinn O’Riley, a charming and subversive intelligence analyst who knows more about the new order of government and society than he is telling, and soon Jinxy joins Quinn in questioning the real motives behind the Academy’s program. But a shocking revelation gets her to recommit to the sniping unit, where she is forced to make an impossible decision, and risks losing everything.
There’s more than one enemy and more than one war.
The Game is real.
The book is primarily a romance set in a world in which a pandemic has shifted politics to the more conservative right. Personal freedoms are being eroded, and people live in a state of terror. Jinxy is an expert gamer who is trained to become an expert sniper, but the story is not about the war or the plague, it's about her and the romance with Quinn.
HOWEVER, I don't want a smoochy, kissy cover (or a war/weapons one). I think a more neutral, symbolic one as the basic design would be best. Please check out the covers for the Divergent, Hunger Games and Shatter me series for a better idea of what I mean.
