This book cover needs to standout as an eBook cover in big or small sizes but also work as a paperback cover.
The cover should specifically target a Retail Employee. Things like the retail employees outfit, using a cash register, interacting with customers etc. This will avoid any confusion with readers who may think its a book aimed at the customers of retail - which it is not.
The tone of this book is humorous and fun whilst providing a ton of useful retail hacks learnt from the many years I spent at my retail job.
So far I’ve had two different ideas for the style of my book cover.
The first is to have a plain but bright coloured background, with the title taking up a lot of the space. (See first example: Get Shit Done). It’s simple yet highly effective at catching someone’s eyes. Any other small elements to compliment this type of design would be great to. As my book is really focusing on the end result of a retail employee winning at their job, which equals less stress, the colours should reflect this emotion. Like pastel blues or greens similar to this Green: #68cd7b Blue: 80bdeb . However feel free to play with other colours and tones that may similarly reflect these ideas.
The second idea is to have some sort of image(s) complimenting the title. I do not want images of real people (e.g. stock images). Animations would work best. So far I’ve been leaning towards the stick figure idea like what you see on toilet doors (See second example). The reason I like these is because they represent the idea of a retail worker being anybody. They’re gender neutral and age neutral. Instantly relatable. I have included an example of a retail employee and customer style that I have played with (See third example). It is very important that images of retail employees and/or customers are very distinctive from each other.
If you have another idea for an image that you feel would work well at representing the book and meets the "anybody can work retail" animation style, please go for it!
Ultimately this book cover really needs to stand out by being bright and striking. It should be instantly relatable to someone who works in retail. It should convey a humorous and fun nature whilst still indicating there is solid, useful information contained within.
Other Design Notes:
The “How To” part of the title can be made smaller to make “Hack Your Retail Job” really stand out and be eye catching.
There is a rebellious nature to the concept of “hacking your retail job”. There is a lot of information in this book that retail managers and further ups wouldn’t want their employees to know.
This is a unique category of book. I chose to write this book because of the frustrating lack of anything out there that could truly help me on my most stressful days of customer service.
