A cartoonish (not detailed) drawing of a map of the Pacific Coast of N America from the Columbia River Gorge to the tip of Baja. The map will be showing the locations where chapters are set (no need to ID chapters on cover), with an emphasizing perspective that focuses on the Baja peninsula, making the other areas north and south not to scale. Crude, handwritten labels would highlight (north to south): the Gorge, Marin County, Black Rock desert (NV), Las Vegas, La Jolla, Carefree, AZ, Punta de Dio, Secret Spot (the latter two about halfway down Baja peninsula and close to each other on Pacific just above Vizcaino peninsula), Scorpion Bay (2/3 way down Baja on Pacific), Playa Ballena (where Los Barriles is located just above Cabo San Lucas on Sea of Cortez), and an arrow (with label) pointing south to San Jose, Costa Rica. We also need an arrow (with label) pointing east to Clearwater, FL. Some cartoonish/simple images of Mountain ranges running north-south, Golden Gate Bridge, cactus and mountains in Baja, whales, HWay 1 zigzagging down Baja, and other stereotypes that are often thought to exist in certain areas. Not too cluttered, keep it simple. The idea is to convey a sense of travel and adventure in this amazingly beautiful part of the world, but with whimsy and lightheartedness. I like bright colors to grab people’s attention, not as neon as Carl Hiaasen covers, but trending in that direction, but much of the land will likely be sand colored, and the ocean should be blue, so do what you can. The title and author’s name should be hand drawn font.
