Biografía del autor
Suzanne Thistle began studying addiction in 1987 when she started her sobriety journey. She is a licensed alcohol and drug counselor and teaches at a local university. Her 20 years of addiction treatment experience includes executive director of two non-profit agencies, clinical director, manager, and therapist. In 2017, she won the Legislative Advocacy Award from the New Hampshire Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor’s Association. In 2015, her agency won the Treatment Provider of the Year Award from the New Hampshire Providers Association. During time off, Suzanne enjoys being with family, traveling, bike riding, hiking, and relaxing at Newfound Lake.

I use a metaphor of hiking a mountain to describe a way out of addiction is by using trailblazers (people in recovery). Medication is not the answer to the addiction crisis. Abstinence-based recovery from a substance use disorder is simple; it is finding a connection to others, support from people who care and working through underlying issues. After 33 years of studying addiction, living a drug-free life, and spending many years working in the substance use disorder profession, it is a gift to share the knowledge of Abstinence-based recovery, "The True Gold Standard." This book provides stories from 101 residents from all over NH who suffer from alcohol or other drug addictions. They attest to the fact that once they take a sip of alcohol or use another addictive drug, all bets are off. They are not able to guarantee they can stop after just one sip, one toke, or one small line of whatever, so best not to drink or use addictive drugs at all. This book provides the help need to live a drug-free life. People no longer have to feel like they are lost in the woods without a way out. If 101 people from a tiny state like NH say they stopped using alcohol or other drugs and haven't found it necessary to pick up a drink or a drug since they made this decision, then others can too. This book is a compilation of knowledge gained from my experience as a clinician, middle manager, senior administrator, a person in abstinence-based recovery, and the experience of over 101 people who are in abstinence-based recovery. It will benefit someone who wants recovery, primary care doctors, decision-makers, and many others. In the beginning, you read about how to use the book, the middle provides 101 stories of hope, and the last section is advocacy points noted by the participants. The participants share how their addiction progressed, their path to recovery, how they don't drink or use daily, their thoughts about medication-assisted treatment, advice on what they want you to know, and their information for decision-makers. I suggest people read at least one of the participant's stories daily, go to a support meeting every day for the next 90 days, to increase their chance of living a drug-free life. Each participant's account offers a little nugget of wisdom to help others survive this terrible crisis.
