Looking for a cover for the print and ebook version of a novel: Deadfall. It's an urban fantasy that borders on superhero in an anti-hero way. It is about the people that inhabit our world that we don’t see or know because they are a little different (due to super-human abilities of one kind or another). None of the characters run around in fancy uniforms. They are just trying to find a place in society where they belong.
This book is aimed at a teen/young adult audience.
Book title- Deadfall (A Post-Humans Story, as subheading)
Synopsis- The story is set in modern Melbourne, Australia. This story is about a woman named Cynthia Abell who goes by the professional alias Deadfall. She is employed as an instigator for a criminal businessman. Cynthia also carries a heavy chip on her shoulder. She has the ability to kill with a touch of her bare skin and this is power and her curse. As far as she knows, she is the only Post-Human in the city, the only person with any kind of inhuman ability.
But something new is happening in the city. There are crimes being committed and they all seem to connect to Cyntha's employer. Something dark is rising in the city of Melbourne and Cynthia and her Partner Mat are finding themselves caught up in the middle of it.
Cynthia/Deadfall is an attractive blonde woman in her mid-to-late twenties. She is a pysically beautiful woman, but she refrains from wearing makeup and sexualising clothes. Her deadly ability to kill with skin contact has made her closed off and a little bitter. She tries to focus on her work and her passion for painting to distract herself from the darker side of herself. She doesn't believe that she deserves a normal life or a happily ever after. She has killed more than once and she chooses not to think about it in case the guilt consumes her.
Cynthia/Deadfall and her partner Mat dress professionally in shirts and pants and wear thigh length jackets. Cynthia/Deadfall also wears a pair of old fashioned black silk gloves that serve as a barrier against anyone touching her skin. They would appear to be detectives or private investigators, only they investigate for a criminal businessman.
In this story there are other colourful characters that appear.
Mirage is a young woman and also a Post-Human with the ability to project alternate appearences of herself into peoples minds. She can make people see any woman or girl she choses, but they never see what she really looks like. She is a cold hearted criminal who revels in having power over men.
Shiver is a Post-Human criminal from Hong Kong. She can crawl on any surface.
The main evil character in the story is a psychotic criminal that calls himself Ace of Clubs. He dresses all in black leather and wears a gimp mask. He fancies himself to be a supervillain.
The story takes place mostly in the city of Melbourne, but there are scenes in the town of Ballarat and in the desert scrub of the north-west.
The book cover should be a little sinister and the imagery should exhibit Deadfall herself in some way.
I have not had any ideas about the design and I am open to suggestion.
What I am looking for, however, is a design that is bold and eye catching. In the past I have prefered a 'new vintage' style of design for my book covers. Simple, bold and timeless. I try not to use imagery that can date quickly.
For this particular cover I have had some thoughts about art deco or and art nouveau to reflect the character's love of art and for this book representing a prequel in my book series.
Text: the title 'Deadfall' needs to be big and bold. The subtitle 'A Post-Human Story' should be small and above the main title. the authors name is Thurston Bassett and I would prefer that to be at the bottom.
Dimensions: 130mm width, 198mm height. 5" width, 7.8" height.
