I am looking for a full CreateSpace cover (front cover, back cover,
and spine) for physical release, as well as a front cover image that
will work for a thumbnail on Amazon. This is for the first book in a
series, so whoever wins would hopefully be willing to design future
covers, as well. The cover should be eye-catching
and striking. It is for a Paranormal Fiction/Fantasy book for Young
Adults, so the cover image should appeal to readers of that genre.
The title is "XODUS" and should be written in all capital letters. Beneath that in much smaller type, it should read “An Astralis Novel.” That part can either be in all caps or just capitalize the first letters. The author name is K.J. McPike. I would like the title font to be unique so that it could double as a word mark. I'd prefer the "X" to stand out in some way from the rest of the letters.
The book is about a girl who can astral project, so I would love if the cover conveyed that somehow. I also want to work in a starry night sky because constellations and stars are important in the story. I have an idea (sort of portrayed in the VERY rough sketch attached) of the back of a girl’s head as she looks up at the night sky, and her long hair (with blue lowlights) has the skyline of San Francisco superimposed on it. Or maybe the hair is see-through, and you can see the cityscape through it. I think it would be cool if it looked like her hair was blowing in the wind. In the top right corner of the night sky would be a circular green light that almost looks like a UFO. Again, this is just an idea, so I am open to other concepts. I’d love to see what everyone comes up with. Either way, I would like the picture on the front cover to wrap around the spine and onto to the back cover. In case it's helpful for some designs, my protagonist is a Persian, with olive skin, crystal-gray eyes, and long dark hair with blue lowlights. She is tall and slender and wears heavy, bold colored eyeliner.
The book's size is 5.5" X 8.5" and it is 388 pages. To figure out the necessary dimensions, you can go here: https://www.createspace.com/Product…_type=SITE
The max file size is 40 MB.
Here is the back cover copy:
"Maybe we were both crazy . . . but what if we weren't? What if my mother really could astral project? What if she wasn't the only one?"
The first time it happened, Lali Yavari told herself it was just a dream. But when she starts flashing between realities during the day and seeing people disappear before her very eyes, she can't deny that something is happening to her--something she's sure is linked to her mother's disappearance.
Then the unsettling Kai Awana shows up at school, and Lali discovers she has inherited her mother's ability to astral project--with a surprising twist. Not only that, but Kai needs her help to get to a world she never knew existed. In exchange, Kai promises to help Lali find her mom using his own unique ability.
Now Lali must learn to control her budding power if she ever hopes to see her mother again. She's not sure she can trust Kai, but with her mother's life hanging in the balance, will she have a choice?
Please also include space for the bar code, the attached QR code with the caption “See what readers are saying on Goodreads” and the two attached publishing logos, one for Terracotta Rose Publishing and the other for Fuzzy Hedgehog Press next to the words “Terracotta Rose Publishing in association with Fuzzy Hedgehog Press. Also, add “Cover design by _____” with your name. ☺
Wherever you can work them in, please add these two quotes:
"An intriguing story driven equally by plot, characters, and angst.”
— Kirkus Reviews
"A modern YA classic in the making.”
— Apex Reviews
If you can also work in my headshot and bio on the back cover, that would be great. The headshot is attached, and the bio is as follows:
K.J. McPike is an infant teacher turned author who loves all things paranormal. She grew up in rural Virginia and started writing stories as a way to escape small-town horrors like Drive Your Tractor To School Day, which was an official part of her high school's Spirit Week. Since escaping said small town, she has made a habit of moving across (and out of) the country. Despite her nomadic tendencies, she spends at least a few months out of the year in Seattle, where she regularly consumes too much caffeine and is more likely to be found in a coffee shop than her own apartment.
Visit her online at http://www.kjmcpike.com.
I'd also love it if you could work in "Book One" or just the number "1" on the spine.
For this contest, I would like to make sure to have all of the
1. A PDF image (front cover, back cover, and spine) for CreateSpace
2. A sized JPEG/PNG file for the front cover to put on Amazon and other websites
3. The original PhotoShop file in case edits need to be made in the
4. A square version of the image (2400 x 2400 pixels) for the Audible cover.
The winning cover artist will be credited on the back cover.
I think that covers everything, but if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask! ☺ Good luck, everyone!
