Size: 5.5x8.5 inches
Spine: This will be quite narrow. I had trouble determining the precise size but around 7-9 mm or 0.275 in.
I’d like the title to be easy to read. I think a less busy cover would be my preference. The goal of the book is to stand out on the Amazon platform as a small thumbnail, as well as full size.
I don’t want the book to look like the military version or representation of “command” and commanding others. I’d like it to be more representative of an inner command of oneself which would then translate to someone overcoming fear and feeling confident on stage.
How I’d like the reader to feel or think about my book from the cover:
I want the reader to determine that this isn’t just another book about speaking. This is the book that will really walk them through the process of how to prepare and deliver speeches. The reader should feel that they must have this book if they are developing their skills or they want to put on more polish in their deliveries. The most important part of the design is that it sells them on this.
Related words and phrases:
“finally something that tells and shows me how to do presentations,” “growing inner confidence,” ease, and comfort, connection, life saver, relief, moving forward again, more polished, easier to do presentations now.
Colour and textures
I think a medium bold color palette may be best. Not sure. Colour gradients can be fun but so can really clear and clean lines. I like textures, too, on some of the backgrounds of some of the example books I saw. But I suspect I’d like a texture to be more subtle than overt. I think for this book, I don’t see a minimalist look really working, though it has its place and I do appreciate it. Just not sure it’s good here.
I hesitate to state colour preferences because I know that so much depends on how they are combined and you have infinitely better skills at that than I do! I’m always amazed at the magic of colour combinations. I know that I don’t like book covers that are pale. I’ve read that blue is very good for business which leads me to want some blue. My goal is that the colours express inner confidence, and a belief that this book will help the reader be successful and overcome fear. Therefore, I’m open to different ideas.
Colours I typically don’t like:
Lime or pale green, yellowy beiges, pink (it’d have to be subtle). For brown, pale yellows and oranges, they would have to depend on the surrounding colours.
Font: I don't like overly narrow fonts unless it is still easily readable. I’ve seen embossed titles and shadowing that are also compelling. I've added some notes in the next section about style I'm looking for. I hope that can help.
business casual (leaning towards sophisticated vs laid back)
serious about helping but not stiff or textbook-y
approachable and friendly but not cartoonish
This doesn’t necessarily have to have an image. If an image is used, I don’t want images of real people, as in photographs (silhouette, may be okay). I’m not sure I want an image of a stage or boardroom or even a microphone. It would depend on how it was done. For instance, I don’t want the cliché of the mic and auditorium as it’s already out there. But I am open to creative uses of related elements. Again, they are optional.
I would like an original design. Also, I don’t want anything elements that will cost extra. If absolutely needed, I need to know what the extra cost will be.
This is my first contest so if there is anything you need from me, please let me know. Thank you for taking the time to read this project and participate in my contest.
