Dear 99 Designs Community,
I would thank you for taking a look at my proposal. I have worked with 99 Designs before, am very pleased with the work done here, and will 100% choose one of the designs entered in this contest. I need a cover for a book of poetry entitled “The Queen of Hearts.” Below are a few specifications for the project.
Basis for Cover Art
The cover art should be based off of this playing card design – linked below:

Here's a public domain image of the Queen

I am very open to any kind of experimentation and plan to offer plenty of feedback. One thing I do not want to experiment with is which version of the Queen of Hearts is used. As you probably know, there are many versions of the Queen of Hearts. I have settled on this version of the Queen of Hearts though. I like the significance of the Queen of Hearts card, and the enclosed card is the best for my purposes. IT SHOULD BE THIS QUEEN OF HEARTS AND NO OTHER QUEEN OF HEARTS. Feel free to use better files if you can find a better or more suitable cover image files of this Queen of Hearts. Feel free to alter the file in any way that you see fit. It does not have to be the whole image. I particularly like the upper left quadrant of this queen of hearts with the Queen's face and the Q sign. However, again, as long as this version of the Queen of Hearts is used, I am open to all sorts of experimentation.
- The cover should look good small, since it will appear as a thumbnail on book vendor websites such as Amazon.
- It should look good greyscale since it will be used on book readers like Kindle
- Any text that is used, I would like to be classic, clean, easy to read.
- The print edition will be 5.5 x 8.5 inches.
- Book title is: The Queen of Hearts
- Author is: Allan Stevo
- Book specs for the printer are listed here: https://www.createspace.com/Product…verPDF.jsp
Upon completion of the contest, I would like the following available for the cover:
1. One Amazon-ready cover for the print edition print (front, back, and spine) as a print-ready PDF
2. One Amazon ready cover for Kindle/PDF publishing (front only) as a JPEG and PDF
I have not been able to find the original designer, but it should be old enough to be in the public domain. Therefore, I would prefer not to pay someone on iPhoto a royalty for what should be a royalty free item. Perhaps you may have a better way to search for this image. If I am wrong about this royalty free issue, I am certainly willing to admit my ignorance and to pay for royalties.
I tend to like the light, airy feel of this covers these days. The title “The Queen of Hearts” should ideally appear somewhere on the cover (but I would also consider no title on cover with the right design), also the name “Allan Stevo” should appear somewhere on the cover, though I am okay with the idea of not having the author's name on the cover with the right design. That, after all, is one of the beauties of this website – lots of room for experimentation and many minds working through those ideas together. I plan to print this book cover matte (rather than glossy) and to use cream colored paper (rather than white). The size of the book will be (5.5 inches x 8.5 inches) and will be less than 100 pages. At that size, Amazon does not recommend that any text be used on the spine. It also recommends not having any hard edges or lines that end on the fold line. The exact page count will be ready in the next few days.
Once this contest is finished on on July 1, 2014, I expect a quick turn around time to get the final cover to the printer and proofed by July 3, a turnaround time, which, based on past experience, should not be a problem.
I hope also that I can offer good feedback to make this process as easy, clear, and constructive as possible. Please feel free to post below with any questions or areas needing clarification and I will do my best to answer them promptly. I would like to thank you again, in advance, for the effort you put into this. In ten days, the winning cover art will be on Amazon.
