We are seeking a design spread for the front, spine, and back covers of a new short story collection.
We are publishing our fourth book in the spring, and we want a striking yet simple design for the cover.
The book is titled The Melting Season, and is a collection of short stories by Thai-American writer Ira Sukrungruang. The stories take place in Thailand and the US, and are about family, food, dysfunction, culture, and fitting in.
We're looking for an illustration, not a photo-based design. The colors should be striking and bold.
The cover will be 8.25 inches by 5.5 inches. We are not yet completely sure of the page count, but we think it will be around 250 pages. Therefore we recommend including a bleed in the final design to give us a little leeway with fitting the cover spread around the spine.
We would like a cover spread designed along the lines of a curving, many branched Bodhi Tree. We were thinking the trunk will climb up and overflow the spine, and the sinewy branches would curl onto the front and back covers.
The sun is shining high on the front page and the moon is shining on the back cover.
This is the image we were inspired by:
We imagine that the background color will be a rich, dark, mottled red, and the tree in a bright gold. Something along these lines (though a slightly darker more mottled red):
(Just to be clear: these images are meant as inspiration only. We do not have copyright to either picture and cannot obtain it.)
We just need the basic illustration and background colors. We can lay the text out ourselves after we receive the files from you. We would need a high quality jpeg or png file in order for us to then work in InDesign.
I have also included a terrible rough design of my own, to show how the image should fit over the book's spread. You should use this just as a clarification of the overall design, not as an artistic guideline to try to base work off of -- I am a terrible illustrator and my work should not be treated as a model. Please deviate from my outline if you see a way to produce a better design.
PS While we will insert the title text ourselves, we will need a lot of neutral space in the design in order to have room for the title, the author's name, and blurbs. Therefore, we suggest making the tree not so voluminous and windy that there is no space to include the text. There should be more background free than in the two sample images we include for inspiration.
