ISI Books is looking for a striking cover design for UNBELIEVABLE, which busts seven common anti-religious myths about the relationship between science and religion.
1) A clean, type-driven cover with strong, readable type to let the subtitle draw the reader in. Ideally this would be paired with a simple icon to draw the reader in. Some ideas for icons (and these are just ideas--they may not work well):
a) Maybe a large sun in the middle of the cover, with a small earth somewhere close to the edge of the cover. See how the bird and the bee icons are used in ON THE MEANING OF SEX, attached below. (Or think of famous, clean, icon-driven book covers like the Malcolm Gladwell books: THE TIPPING POINT, DAVIDS AND GOLIATHS, OUTLIERS, etc.)
b) A pair of symbols representing scientific inquiry and religious faith: say, a telescope and a crucifix?
c) A simple fire to suggest being burned at the stake, as Giordano Bruno was?
2) Using historical images to depict some of the myths in the book: See attached covers of GALILEO GOES TO JAIL and HOW THE WEST WON, which pair two historical images to convey the range of the book. The kinds of images that could be used for UNBELIEVABLE include (some jpgs attached below--but feel free to find other images):
a) The trial of Galileo
b) The burning of Bruno at the stake
c) Depictions of a flat earth
