Get in the Boat: A Roadmap to Technology Relevance
Biografía del autor
Pat Bodin's career in Information Technology includes stints with Lockheed Martin and Turner Broadcasting (CNN). He also spent time early on with a small start-up known as Cisco before creating the acclaimed education and consulting company Firefly. Pat is now working to help large IT vendors and system integrators adapt to the biggest shift in the IT industry’s history: the move to digital business models. As Pat sees it, the challenge to adapting digital business models is coming not from the business units but from not including the IT professionals in the business decisions. To use his words "Never in the history of the world has technology been so important to the success of business while at the same time never has technology people been so excluded from decision making". Pat is big picture and a bit controversial in his views. His passion is initiating and managing transformation; next to this, he’s a world traveler, speaker and executive coach. This book is not the rehashing of conventional ideas.
Descripción del libro
Get in the Boat is a non-fiction business book which aims to teach IT technologists how to be relevant to their company's goals by understanding the C-Suite's desires, connecting their tasks to business value, and communicating more effectively.
The key message is that there are 3 types of people in the organization. There are Strategic managers and thinkers (Green), Technicians who are good at doing (Red) and people who are able to bridge the two (Blue). The goal to becoming relevant is to become blue. Pat's ideas are very new. Most IT people think they need more knowledge or better communicating skills to move forward. While communication skills are important, changing the way they think and look at business is the key.
We want this book to stand out. Have fun. Do things that you have always wanted to include and were afraid to. We won't judge.
Público al que se apunta
The target audience is IT technologists, those who work with computer systems in a business contexts. This is a global audience, not only US-based.
But the book is not about IT. This is a book about how to become included in decision making. How to become relevant, needed and respected.
This is the thing that IT people today desire. They are seen as the prevention department and not the enabling department. They want to be part of the solution and success in business. This is more than getting a new skills. It is a way of thinking. The people reading this book are dissatisfied with their existing role and want more.

Our primary idea is to have the cover image similar in style to this image:
If you can include a second, smaller boat in the image, with a single person in it, that would be great. The idea is that technologists are in a "different boat" and need to "get in the boat" with everyone else.
