I am working on a nonfiction book about American history, specifically New England. I want my cover to include a photo of a strong, lean, somewhat grizzled old New England Yankee. The time period is about 1850. He is about 55, and is in a workshop of some sort, his head down, working on some wood or iron project in his New England workshop. His face should be pensive, focused, and downward like the photo of Daniel Day Lewis for the film "Lincoln." If I had to describe this person's looks, I would say imagine Uncle Sam without the costume, makeup, flashy coloring, or fancy beard. What Uncle Sam would look like on his off day, working in his workshop. The workshop should contain a window, and through the window should be a vista of a beautiful old white New England church, high steeple. It is about 7:00 PM on a New England evening, not nighttime yet, so the church and outdoors are still visible, but definitely the husk of evening starting to descend. The Yankee's workshop is lit by candle, and is full of ingenious projects at various stages of completion.
I will be incorporating a rich series of paintings and graphics across my marketing campaign. This campaign will include book covers, website images, designs for social media platforms, etc. My expectation is that 5-10 images will be needed, plus some additional graphic designs, all centering around the same theme/genre of American history, and primarily around this Yankee figure. My primary sample, which contains the colors, tone, and themes that I'm aiming for, is a cover of the Founder's Bible, which is a Bible written in the context of its role in American history. While this is not my subject matter, the artwork contained in this book is very similar to the look and feel of what I want to accomplish in my series. More images from within this book, many of which are in line with the feel I'm trying to capture, are available here: https://thefoundersbible.com/#lookinside. I expect my book to be released in October, and so I will need to have most of the artwork done by mid-August, to be able to build my website and roll out marketing materials.
I have included sample images of the Founders' Bible, the Lincoln photo, and a New England church. I have also included a photo from a book on Charles Goodyear, but only for a sample of a possible workshop, not for the look of Goodyear himself.
