I picture the main character in simple linen trousers and shirt, a coarse fabric like one prisoners would be made to wear in medieval times. The cover is a shot of his back and the linen shirt is torn and bloody from where he's been whipped. He holds a sword down at an an angle to the ground in his right hand, and in his left is in a fist. It is night time, and he's in a clearing in the woods. The only light is from the campire off and to his left. In the book, the character has the ability to absorb energy from light and fire, so I want to see tracers of fire leaping into his fisted left hand and have it glowing, maybe a thin veil of fire swirling around it. His head would be hanging down, and I want his posture to convey tensed and desperate, but ready to fight and explode into action. In front of him, in the back ground of the cover, I want to show nightlings crouched and lurking outside of the circle of light provided by the fire as well as hiding and lurking in the trees further back. The nightlings are creatures of various size, but think scaly monsters. Some like large dogs with sleek dark gray or black skin, some almost humanoid but obviously not human, large claws and fans. I would like a few to be where you can see some outline of their forms outside of the circle of light (they wouldn't be in the light since it hurts them to be in light.) And further back, the glow of their eyes in the trees and woods surrounding him--their eyes would glow red/amber/yellow/orange. I want the mood to be a dark one, like the main character is making a stand against creatures he has no chance of winning against, but he's determined too, determined to fight. I want it to be a desperate mood with a ton of the creatures ahead of him, their outlines more and more vague as you get further away from the light, sometimes only their eyes showing. I'd also like it to really show that the main character is ready to fight, and to have wind maybe blowing his hair and his tunic to the side. Rustling the leaves in the dark trees. A mood that, in a moment, he's going to be fighting for his life against these monsters.
