This novel is a dark dystopia, yet humorous. It's a philosophically poignant, yet a fun read with five action scenes.
Thus, it's a bit difficult to fit this novel into a specific genre. It's set in an alternate universe similar to mid-'80s America, but the main conflict involves speculative technology. Thus an Urban/Science Fiction/Dystopian - I guess.
Most of the setting takes place at a large American University.
Most of the buildings described are of the "brutalist" architecture style.
Our hero also spends some time hiding-out in the campus underground steam tunnels.
Then again, because of the '80s pop culture-type setting and references, a Synth Wave / Outrun / Vaporwave / Neon style may work.
So if you think you can combine slabs gray concreate with pastel neons - go for it.
First person protagonist, Guage Alabaster, is a naïve beta-male - short, thin, awkward, Caucasian, dark hair, wears a purple hoddie - a geek without glasses. In hiding, he often has his hood up. Thus, visually, he's not interesting. His plight, however, is more notable. He's having a hard time on campus - ostracized - unfairly labeled by the school newspaper as a problematic threat to campus safety. His speech is repressed.
Maybe, for symbolism, have that impressive/oppressive brutalist campus skyline in the background.
Looking at the attached images, I really like slightly rebellious expression of the girl in the hoodie. Gauge could have a similar quiet, defiant, and determined expression.
Despite some of the attached images, don't give Gauge handcuffs.
The climatic fight scene involves black cloaked ninjas outside an abandoned nuclear power plant at night.
OR: You could feature a few of the books other colorful characters including:
Abat Gart: Yokel strongman. Looks like a stereotypical lumberjack.
Tilly Pickering: Techno-wunderkind, cute, precocious 11-year-old girl
Shade: Mysterious entrepreneurial commando, lives in a amusement park castle, much like Snake Eyes from '80s GI Joe (The attached image "Jix" is most similar, but he's in all black instead of purple and without a bird and without skates)
Bimmy Fletch: Reckless slacker/grifter on skates (The attached image "Bimmy" is most similar, except without the squirrel and guitar)
Stank E. Fingers: Lawyer and clown (The attached image "Attorney the Clown" is most similar, except without the robot).
OR: Perhaps, your ideas are much more creative (and even more appropriate) than mine. Give it a shot. I'm curious to see what you can come up with!
