Denis Elliott is my 95 year old grandfather and a Second World War veteran. The first years of his life were spent in a London orphanage before going on to be fostered by two sets of foster parents, the second set being somewhat better than the terrible first. In 1942, Denis was called up and went into the R.A.F to train as a pilot. He was sent via troop ship to South Africa and then on to Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) to undertake his training. Once he passed and had his wings, he was posted across Africa until he reached Cairo, from where he was posted to Palestine (now Israel), where he converted on to Wellington bombers. From there he was posted to India and coverted on to the B-24 Liberator. At the age of 20, he captained a crew and completed a full tour of operations against the Japanese with 159 squadron.
He remained in the R.A.F as a pilot until 1957.

On the front cover, we would like to convey the journey that Denis' life took him on. From a unconfident orphan with a bleak future ahead of him, to a confident commissioned officer who flew iconic aircfraft like the B-24 Liberator in the Far East and Lancaster Bomber across the Mediteranian and Britain. Who travelled the world, escaped death many times. The upward journey of his life, but also, the highs and lows, the bleakness and euphoria, the depth of his life. We want the cover to have a vintage feel and to ellicit a strong emotional response from potential readers and for the cover to draw them in, to make them have to read the book to satisfy a burning curiosity. For the cover to propose a question that only buying and reading the book can satisfy.
A photo of a Liberator on the front cover.
But, the cover has to be clearly understood as a thumbnail, this is essential.
Lo que debe evitarse
We can't think of anything, except to avoid cliche's. But honestly, we want you to use your full creative mind, then we'll go from there.
