Text In Black Banner: Harmony: Jazz
Title: The Berklee Book of Jazz Harmony
Authors: Joe Mulholland and Tom Hojnacki
Font Treatment: Must be an easily readable font. We tend to be conservative about typefaces. Keep title in top half of design. It needs to be big and clear enough to be legible in an icon image of this graphic, just an inch or two high. “Jazz Harmony” should be most prominent. “Berklee” can also be relatively large.
Potential Art Concepts:
1. See our cover style at Berkleepress.com (look at New Releases).
2. Try an image of music being made. Avoid gear-centric photos. Multiple people making music is best, ideally including someone playing a piano, or possibly a jazz guitar (like a Gibson).
3. Avoid designs that are too cartoony, or too technical, or aimed too young, or that feature models rather than realistic-looking musicians. This is a work intended for serious musicians, and the cover needs to have some gravitas. Musicians tend to be fairly cynical, so keep it real.
Book Content Description:
This is a ~350 page textbook useful as a comprehensive reference on jazz harmony. We expect it to have very widespread appeal, hopefully worldwide, on the college level. It is aimed at intermediate to advanced/professional level musicians. The approach is quite technical, aimed primarily at students.
This book teaches how to achieve deepened creative expression. While a technical cover concept is tempting, let’s aim for something captivating.
