I am looking for a cover design for my middle grade fiction book, Wands And Wings. It is the story of Tia Faylinn, who comes from a long line of Fairy Queens. She is, however, half mortal, so she lives her life between Earth and The Fairy Realm.
The cover captures Tia in the Royal Throne Room of The Fairy Realm on the eve of her 13th birthday, just before she loses her powers and memories of the Fairy kingdom to become fully human.
I would like the front cover to be Tia sitting on a throne. She has long, sandy-brown hair and an extraordinary shade of emerald green eyes (a plot point). I want her to be cartoonish, not realistic. I have included an attachment of a cover I like that shows that style of character.
Tia is wearing her every day middle school girl clothing to represent her human side (jeans, sneakers, and a flowing, tunic style shirt, and a necklace with stars), but she also sports a crown, a golden wand, and her lacey wings. Her golden wand has a star made of crystal at the top and a small, jeweled crown at its base.
I envision the throne having a high back, purple/plum colored velvet and a gold-gilded frame – maybe with some fairies carved in for decoration. There is an elegant monogramed ‘T’ sewn in golden thread on the back of the seat, towards the top of the throne. The throne should be larger than Tia to show her innocence. Maybe one of her sneakers is untied to show her naiveté.
On the seat or the arm of the throne is a chocolate bar with a bite taken out of it. If you want to get creative, the chocolate has an elegant, script ‘FC’ logo on it. Somewhere on the floor is a pair of purple and gold pom-poms and a volleyball. And I would also like Tia’s female Welsh spring spaniel, Duchess, on the cover. Duchess has a set of lacey wings on her back.
The title, Wands And Wings at the top of the front cover and author’s name, Jo Malizia, at the bottom.
I want you to be creative and have fun! However, I don’t want the cover to be too busy, since and it’s very important that is easy to see as a thumbnail image: I have listed additional items in the throne room from the book that do not need to be on the cover, but gives you room to play: Purple canopy with gold fringe behind the throne, a black and white checkered marble floor, a red carpet leading to the throne. Tia might be wearing her royal red robe with ermine fur. But, I must stress that I need the thumbnail image to easily seen.
The back cover is a dark blue sky with stars. If you want to be extra creative, the constellation of The Pleiades, or Seven Sisters, is integral to the story, but just a starry sky is fine. It’s important the stars don’t interfere with the blurb on the back cover. If you want to move Duchess, the dog with wings, to the back cover, you can play around with that.
I have the blurb and author’s bio, along with the website address for the back cover as an attachment. The top sentence of the blurb needs to stand out from the rest of the text. You can be creative here.
I do not want any stock photography or clip art used in this design. All work must be original. Don’t use any fonts that aren’t available for anyone to use free of charge.
The cover dimensions of my paperback book (printed through CreateSpace for Amazon) is 5.25” x 8”. I have attached CreateSpace’s cover formatting guidelines.
I also need a jpg of the front cover for the Kindle version, along with the devices on Smashwords (Apple, Barnes & Noble, Sony, Kobo, etc.) The general format for eBooks seems to be a jpg, 600px x 800px, 300 dpi under 127 kb.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have questions or need clarification. Make sure you check out the attachments for the back cover and pictures of the general ideas I’m going for.
I can’t wait to see my fictional world come to life through your designs!
