COVER IDEA No. 1: The background should be darkness with the main title reversed out at the top, perhaps in some sort of script. The subtitle is reversed out at the bottom in smaller type, above the author’s name, “By D. F. Lewis.” The central image shows four people descending a stone stairway lined with damp stone walls. In front is a man who resembles Poe dressed in mismatched clothing that is too large for him, including an oversized coat that reaches below his knees. He is holding aloft a whale oil lamp that is the sole source of illumination for the scene. The lamp looks like a teapot atop a bell-shaped base, with a long handle and a hook for hanging it. You can see a picture of what I have in mind by going to Pinterest.com and searching for whale oil lamps. Behind the leader of this procession is a gray-haired man with a full beard. He has a wounded left shoulder crudely wrapped in a bloody bandage. His right hand is on the leader’s shoulder. Behind the wounded man is a teenage girl in a red cloak and bonnet of the style worn in the 1840s. (You can Google it.) She has her hand on the wounded man’s good shoulder. At the rear is a woman wearing a hooded cloak that makes her look a bit like the image of death (you know, the hooded guy with the scythe). She is out of contact with the others and is reaching out as if eager to catch up. She is carrying a small basket with handles such as one might take to a picnic. The purpose of the illustration is to make potential readers wonder what the heck is going on and want to read the book to find out.
COVER IDEA No. 2: Alternatively, if Idea No. 1 is too complicated for the space available, the central illustration would show the head and shoulders of a woman wearing a veil. Her features are hidden but her eyes are faintly visible through the mesh, staring malevolently at the person viewing the image. She wears a black dress buttoned up tightly to the base of the neck. Her hair is also black. She wears a bejeweled necklace and diamond earrings. Think in terms of a female version of the Grim Reaper.
Lo que debe evitarse
No image of Poe should appear in the design in any form. Many are available on the internet, but any depiction of Poe would give the wrong impression: that this is just another boring Poe bio. It’s actually an adventure story.
