Whom Shall I Fear? Pushing the Politics of Change
Ewart Brown
Dr. Ewart Brown served as the Premier of Bermuda from 2006 to 2010. Trained as a physician at Howard University, he opened the Vermont Century Medical Clinic in South Central Los Angeles before returning to his native Bermuda, where he founded Bermuda Healthcare Services. In 1993, he won election to parliament representing the Progressive Labour Party, serving as Minister of Transport beginning in 1998. As a member of parliament and then as Premier, Brown was a strong advocate of racial equality, Bermudan independence, and economic development.
Outspoken, accomplished, and sometimes controversial, Bermudian physician and political leader Dr. Ewart Brown has been a longtime champion of human rights, economic fairness, and racial equality. In this memoir, Brown looks back on his colorful life, beginning with his boyhood in Bermuda, his school years in Jamaica, and his successes as an amateur athlete representing Bermuda in international competitions. In 1968, he helped lead the student occupation of Howard University's administration building and took part in negotiations with university trustees. After earning his medical degree, Brown built successful medical practices that served underprivileged communities in Los Angeles and Bermuda. He then entered politics, rising within the Progressive Labour Party to become Premier in 2006. WHOM SHALL I FEAR? recounts Brown's battles against the entrenched interests that have tended to dominate Bermudian politics, his struggles to free the island nation from the shackles of colonialist thinking, and his efforts to promote equality of economic opportunity for all.
Everyone in Bermuda knows Ewart Brown, and almost everyone has an opinion about him. Many Bermudians will be eager to read his own account of his colorful, controversial political career. Brown is also well known in leadership circles in the so-called Black diaspora--in the African-American community in the U.S., as well as among Black leaders throughout the Caribbean.
This should have the look of a classic political memoir--serious and thoughtful. Bear in mind, however, that the author has always been a bit of a firebrand (student activist, controversial advocate of civil rights), so please try to evoke a bit of "fierceness" rather than providing a design that appears "stodgy." A challenging balancing act that I hope you will find interesting! Please use the author photo uploaded below as the centerpiece for your design.
If you wish to evoke the author's Bermudian heritage, please do so subtly, avoiding any imagery that smacks of cliched "island" stereotypes.
