The news didn't accurately tell the story of what happened in Charlottesville, VA in May, July, Aug, and Oct. I will tell what I witnessed in the beginning and then switch to (hopefully) fiction. The story is like the Odyssey- culminating with a divorced father reuniting with kids up north. The pivotal moment is a national blackout in Aug 2018 that coincides with yet another "Unite the Right" rally in C'ville.

I don't know! I imagine the US and Confederate flags will appear on many of the submissions. I'm OK with that, but designers should scroll through Civil War books on Amazon and note how many times that has been done.
At its heart, it's a story of a regular guy who finds himself in terrifying situations. First line: "The only good thing to come from the Unite the Right long weekend of terrorism was that it made me get sober."
Protagonist saw the writing on the wall and started getting in shape, acquiring camping gear and weapons, and training. He tearfully says goodbye to ex-wife and kids, knowing that they are safer with her boyfriend (a Marine veteran) heading north her father's house. Protag must stay in town during the UtR 2.0 invasion because he has to take care of his mother. The power outage will kill her and he will be out for blood and revenge. Though the protag will make it to his kids successfully, there is no happy ending. Subsequent books will be about the evolving war.
I will credit the winning designer (if she/he would like) in the book and on my web site, Twitter, etc.
NOTE: I would like the final files in .psd format with un-rasterized layers unmerged. This gives me the ability to make small changes without having to contact the designer. For example, I might want to add a subtitle or "Book 1". I plan on a series, so, I'll be back in touch for subsequent books. (I did 8 1-on-1 projects with the designer who won my first contest.)
Lo que debe evitarse
Expensive stock imagery and fonts.
I'm not a big fan of giving the protagonist a face on the cover. I don't want to color readers' image of him.
The first submission (thank you for taking the risk) by Fwhitehouse7732: Michael Campbell is too small, and I think I generally prefer it on the bottom. I don't like the 2nd Civil War font- but it's not too far off the mark.
To my inexpert eyes, it looks like sepia-tone, which is pretty de riguer for Civil War books, as are the images of the Confederate and US flag.
This won't be the Blue vs Grey, but terrorism, guerrilla tactics.
A huge problem is the difficulty telling one side from the other. This leads to nazis wearing UVA apparel to look like locals, and how the left starts to split because neither black nor white people can tell which side white people are on. There are no uniforms in this book. Maybe in subsequent.

Holy **** that's annoying- images upload to 99designs wrong whether I rotate them or not.
All x images are of C'ville 8/11&12 by Getty. For reference only.
That's the Jefferson statue that sits in front of the Rotunda.
The private militia there to "protect" the nazis from the unarmed citizens of Charlottesville. They outgunned the local and state police.

Virginia motto on state flag: Sic Semper Tyrannis, which were the words John Wilkes Booth yelled at Ford's Theater when he assassinated Lincoln. VA has a complicated history.
It would be black and scuffed up.
