EVERYONE IS A MOON is a collection of 12 Dark Fiction short stories. Their tones range from absurdist comedy to graphic horror.
The cover art should likewise lean dark/creepy, but since many stories are decidedly offbeat, the style can be a bit abstract/surreal. (See samples I uploaded of some designs I like.) I also included a sketch someone did of a cover concept for this book -- a cluster of human figures with moons for heads, the moons hovering above them like balloons and attached to their necks by tendon-like strings. While I like this concept, I am NOT completely sold on it, so feel free to do your own thing if something else inspires you.
As for font(s), something easy to read but distinctive.
I need both a version for the ebook (front cover only), and a full cover version for the print edition (front cover + back and spine).
Here are the ebook image specs for Amazon.com KDP, which you should follow:
Kindle Direct Publishing accepts two types of files for cover images
JPEG, or .jpeg
TIFF, or .tif(f)
Requirements for the size of cover art:
--Ideal height/width ratio of 1.6
--For best quality, image should be 1563 pixels on the shortest side and 2500 pixels on the longest side.
--Cover image must be less than 50MB
Product images display on the Amazon website using RGB (red, green, blue) color mode. Remember that the cover should look good as a thumbnail, the book title and author name readable.
For the print edition, back cover text can be found above.
The look of the back cover should blend well with the front. Also add the DARK PARK logo and the barcode (both at the bottom).
Size of print book will be 5.25" X 8"
Spine: I am not yet sure of the page count, so let's estimate 208 pages. This means you should design the spine to be .468" in width (208 multiplied by 0.002252); this will most likely have to be adjusted when I determine the final page count.
The spine should include the book's title and "Sawney Hatton” and the Dark Park logo.
The full cover will be delivered to the printer as a single PDF that includes the back cover, spine, and front cover as one image. (Flatten all layers in the native file.)
The printable area must be:
--Measured exactly to the book's trim size, spine width, and .125" bleed (bleed of .125” is required on all sides. The bleed at the bottom of the page must not exceed .125”; there should be no "live" elements within .25” of the trim lines.)
--Centered horizontally and vertically
--300 DPI image resolution recommended. Higher resolutions are acceptable.
Cover Width: Bleed + Back Cover Trim Size + Spine Width + Front Cover Trim Size + Bleed (in this case= 11.7004")
Cover Height: Bleed + Book Height Trim Size + Bleed (in this case= 8.75")
From the winning designer I would like a jpg of the front cover, a pdf of the full cover, and the graphic files you used to create it (preferably in Photoshop).
If you have any questions, please ask. Have fun!
