I am in need of a book cover for my book "Of Royal Descent". It is a paranormal romance and is the first book in a trilogy. I need a full book cover design (front/back/spine 600 x 900, or 6×9 and has 452 page length) as well as the front image to function well for an eBook version. There will need to be a 2” x 1.2” white box for the ISBN barcode. Cover art should have a minimum of 625 pixels on the shortest side and 1000 pixels on the longest side.
Author: Ember Shane
Title: Of Royal Descent
Subtitle: Royal Series, Book I
Back cover blurb:
They say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. But sometimes, under extreme circumstances, it's exactly that which kills you that makes you stronger. And faster. And a member to a new, elite race of zombies.
Armed with a current address for his biological grandfather and a slightly unusual, yet loyal best friend, Doyle Hawthorne sets out to discover the truth about his past. But answers don't come easily and the closer Doyle arrives to his destination, the more confusing things become. Disturbing alterations to his physical appearance as well as to his personality flicker on and off as Doyle searches for a logical explanation.
Despite the increasing severity of these uncontrolled flare-ups, Doyle is determined to keep his first date with Addy - a beautiful, young woman he has met upon his arrival into town. After narrowly subduing his raging impulses, Doyle quickly decides not even death itself can keep him from her. Unfortunately, he is about to test that theory.
Once initiated, nothing can alter the process of shading - the term given to the three distinct phases of becoming a higher classification of zombie, commonly referred to as "royals". Doyle must learn to control his tendency toward violence as well as his newfound royal powers if there is any chance of protecting those he loves from a mad scientist, the government, the colony of royals, and most importantly... himself.
The main protagonist is Doyle Hawthorne, who discovers his biological family was hidden from him for a reason. After undergoing pheromone and endocrine system manipulation at the hands of the government, Doyle's grandfather has forever cursed his lineage. Doyle now possesses a "monster gene" making him, in fact, zombie royalty.
Physical characteristics of royals: cobalt blue flesh, eye shift (This is an enlarging of the eye socket and thick, non-oxygenated blood coating the cornea. I always picture this kind of like the standard, wide alien eyes.), an extra row of long, jagged teeth that protrude from the bottom gum line, frequent crouched position
Sensory characteristics of royals: marked increase in all desires of the flesh (hunger, sex, rage), super speed, increased strength, increased sense of smell (ability to smell/taste strong emotion), self-healing properties
Physical traits of Doyle: dark, wavy hair that is long enough to fall in his eyes, athletic build, reserved clothing (hooded sweatshirts, jeans), generally good-looking
Physical traits of Addy Murray (love interest): pale white skin, brown eyes, long, wavy chestnut hair, average build
There are several settings used in the story: highway (road trip), hotel rooms, the clinic, a basement holding cell, the mountains, a forest. These all have their place in the story, but I am most drawn to the idea of a forest for a possible backdrop. Ultimately, it's a paranormal romance and I would think a forest would give off that gothic romance feel more delicately. I also wouldn't mind seeing an urban-style cover where a dark city street is the backdrop. Or even a simpler design cover where the top and bottom are just gothic, elegant design and the book title and author name in the middle. If done right, I think that could work well too. If you need a reference for a similar title, Karen Marie Moning has an awesome cover for Shadowfever that would fall into that category.
Creativity is greatly encouraged. I can tell you I generally go for the darker covers or something with a blue overlay (as blue is a prominent color throughout the novel). Also, if Doyle is on the cover, I think I would prefer if he were in his royal form, partially concealed by shadow. Or if he is in human form, I would still like him to have "eye shift" with large, black eyes. If Addy is there with him, I would like something similar to the promotional movie poster of "Fear", where you get a view of her profile leaning into him. If there is a forest in the backdrop, I would like it to wind all the way to the back cover. There could even be a far off helicopter in the distance (as one tracks him at one point in the story).
