Slay Bells is the first in a new mystery series entitled Christmas Village Mysteries. It's a mystery story written in the Golden Age style but with many of the trappings of a modern day cozy mystery. It takes place in the fictional village of Christmas and the sleuth is a little old lady named Maribel Claus. In Slay Bells, a troupe of circus performers are in town for the annual Christmas Festival and they're staying at a boarding house owned by a friend of Maribel's. Two of them are murdered by means that seem impossible. It's up to Maribel to figure out howdunit and whodunit.

I have an image in my head, but I don't wish to be too stringent upfront because in my experience artists often have better ideas than myself. However, here's what I definitely want: the cover needs to have both an old-fashioned mystery book cover appeal and a colorful cozy mystery appeal. I imagine the title in red (but not blood dripping), other Christmas colors as well, a winter scene, Christmas trappings (such as wreaths, mistletoe, etc.) perhaps an old fashioned three-story house/bed & breakfast. Or even just a part of such a house (if you're inspired by a close-up image). Gardens, Christmas decorations, and maybe in the distance a couple of sable ferrets (they are in the book). So, the cover must convey mystery (sinister) as well as cozy. It could be a brightened night scene or day scene. Also, if you can make the cover give the impression it's aged, that would be great. By that I mean the illusion of wear, as though it were a 60 year-old paperback. I've attached the covers of a couple of books that I like that gives some idea of the tone and feel I want as far as background. But truthfully, I'd like my cover to be much better, richer, and more striking. The artist I end up going with will be commissioned in the near future for the next editions of this series, so I'm hoping I can find the relationship I'm looking for here on 99 Designs.
Lo que debe evitarse
I do not want any human faces on the cover. Or photographs.
