Steven Wetstein lives in his hometown of Miami, Florida. Before retiring in 2019, he made his living cooking in its restaurants and hotels for forty years. Since 1986, he has been an active member of Amnesty International and other social justice organizations. Just Being Alive: A Story of Struggle and Self-acceptance is his memoir of living with autism and mental illness and is his first book.

From the moment in kindergarten when he joined his class in singing If You’re Happy and You Know It Clap Your Hands— and felt ashamed that he wasn’t happy—Steven Wetstein knew he was different. Shy, alone, afraid, but bright, he made it through grade school, but was lost in adulthood. Bombing out of college, and without job skills, he made a scant living as a cook. Estrangement from his family followed, and he never had an intimate relationship or built a circle of friends. This was partly due to his complicated sexuality. Identifying more with being female than male, but not so much that he wished—or felt capable—of acting on this, he never came out and publicly joined the LGBT community. But he did not give up on life. Reading and human rights activism allowed him to use his mind and express his compassion for others. Starting medication in his thirties helped to control his anxiety and depression. Then, two decades later, he was diagnosed with autism. All his differentness, sensitivity and isolation became seen in a new light. It was one more way station in his struggle to find meaning and dignity in a troubled life. Just Being Alive fulfills Steve’s life-long dream to take down the wall of secretness he has lived behind and tell his story to the world.

It's hard to say since this is my first book. I hope to reach people who identify with one or more of the issues in my life, like mental illness, autism and being LGBT. As well it may be of interest to those who have someone in their life who has any of these issues to deal with. Beyond that, I hope to reach a general audience.

I have no real preconceptions of what my cover might look like. Amazon Cover Creator would allow me to produce a bare bones cover with my book title, name and a simple line graphic, but I want something with a professional's graphic creativity. The book's subject matter is serious, as is my treatment of it, so I'm not looking for a humorous cover. I'm moved a few of the slider bars above to indicate my preferences, but I'm open to your ideas. I do want the cover to pique the potential reader's interest and indicate in some way that serious topics will be covered, but the book isn't all gloomy, and I don't want the cover to be sad or off-putting. I have not yet sent my book out for reviews. To do that, I need to have a sales sheet. When I pick a designer, I am presuming, right now, that I will want them to make the flyer as well. It will have the relevant information about my book, a copy of its cover, my bio, etc. I assume that you're familiar with such flyers. It's therefore important for me to find a designer I will have a good working relationship with. I don't know whether a sales sheet would be considered a flyer, priced at $169, or a poster, at $199. Please tell me how you think this would be handled. One last note: I have uploaded a photo of myself, but it's not a professional one and it's ten years old. I would get a professional one now, but am holding off because of the pandemic. I'm assuming the photo isn't good enough to be incorporated into the cover, but I am willing to use it on the flyer. If you should feel it should be used on the cover, I'm open to ideas, but I doubt that it's good enough, has the needed resolution, or that it's needed.
