Ms. Rice was born and raised in the midwest, her hometown not terribly different from Springdale. She has been both a writer and a singer since she was a child.
Descripción del libro
This collection of slice-of-life short stories paints a tableau of the people who inhabit a small, Midwestern town in the early 1950’s. Lena—an aspiring dancer; Phillip—a teen struggling with his sexual identity; Ursula—a grieving mother; Doris—a victim of debilitating depression; Lacey—a girl growing up on the wrong side of the tracks; and Rosie—adopted by a childless couple in her eighth year; all of these characters and more reveal the stories of their lives behind closed doors. As the inhabitants confront their crises, whether fleeting or existential, the reader is drawn into their struggles, and becomes invested in their deliverance.

Necesidades de diseño
Sepia tone photos, blurred into a collage and contrasting summer colors...the contrasting the happy times with the tragic and sad times, people behind closed doors keeping their secrets—not unlike today. The phrase I use to describe the overall message: "Everything is different, yet nothing ever changes." I use lucinda calligraphy for book title, contents, quotes, and story titles, and garamond for story text. I might use white lettering on cover.
Lo que debe evitarse
Use of stock imagery, recognizable names of businesses, bold colors.
