Looking for a cover for the print and ebook version of a novel: Jack Lorde. It's an urban fantasy that borders on super hero in an anti-hero way. It is about the people that inhabit our world that we don’t see or know because they are a little different (due to super-human abilities of one kind or another). None of the characters run around in fancy uniforms. They are more anti-hero than heroes, just trying to find a place in society where they belong. Aimed at a teenage to young adult audience. Design brief is below the synopsis (bare with me!) Synopsis: Around the world there are so many secrets. Secret police, secret agents and secret places. Eli Elliot is a normal guy with a passion for history's secrets. Lost temples, forgotten cities and cultures long since gone. His curiousity about these things and an unusual sighting he posts on the Internet, draw the attention of a secret College. It just so happens that Jack Lorde works as a field agent for this secret College and decides to show the young man that there is far more to the world than the simple history that he reads about. But things take a turn for the worst when they stumble into an ancient and shadowy race that is congregating beneath the city of Melbourne and Jack's old nemesis appears to be at its heart. Jack Lorde is a covert field operative for the Ledbrook College. A secret London university that caters for talented individuals that study the occult, supernatural and the forgotten secrets of the world. Jack's role in the college is to investigate and potentially eliminate threats to human culture from the Shadow Folk. These are the forgotten races that humans share the planet with. They live under our noses, yet we never know they exist. These are primarily what is called the cabalus, which are an ancient race that was historically documented as goblins in fairy tales. But there are others, tolls, vampires and a grotesque family of creatures that are simply known as the blue-eyes, the makers of vampires. This story is set in modern day Melbourne, Australia. An unlikely place for a goblin infestation, but this book is a side story to another I have written which sets the events of this one into play. The characters in this story are unrelated and unaware of the characters of the previous book, but they will join with them in a subsequent story. So the worlds are the same. the book centres around two main characters, Eli Elliot and Jack Lorde. Eli is a university student who has moved to the big city with his best friend to study. He is pretty normal, if not very shy. He spends more time with his history professor than he does making any new friends. He is dragged into the story when the Ledbrook College see some gruesome footage he films by accident. But he has something of interest that is constantly referred to in the book; a bronze dagger of ancient German design. This turns out to have magic properties and saves his life on several occasions. This could form an strong point in the cover design. Jack is an old englishman is not unlike Indianna Jones. An adventurous, combat ready know-it-all. He is also far older than he appears, being over a century old. He dresses in a drovers coat, or oiled jacked that reaches his calves and wears high leather boots and a dark wide-brimmed hat. I didn't really want his appearance to be central to the cover design, but it could be part of it, depending on how its used. He carries a japanese sword and his body is covered with tattoos that form magical wards and so on. I should describe the cabalus. i have described them as gangly, pale humanoids with long claws and pointed teeth, and the blue-eyes that also appear in the story appear as albino gorillas with elongated skulls and bulging blue eyes. The major bad character turns out to be the immortal man that is Jack the ripper. He is committing various murders and he working for another older more evil foe, who is only hinted at. Jack the ripper is a balled man who dresses well in a dark suit and black coat. Design Brief: Cover: I'm hoping to get a cover which has a bit of style - not necessarily just photo manipulated characters. In fact, I don't think a front-on character cover will work here. But then again, if you've got the magic touch I'd love to see what you can do - just not with models looking directly at the reader! I imagine either something with a dark atmosphere or something that utilizes a symbolism or a vintage/modern classic look. The book style fits somewhere between urban fantasy and new weird. Some ideas might be to incorporate a silhouette or a stylised cover. Most of the story takes place in a the city of Melbourne, so a city background might work. Also there is the magic bronze dagger that could be a feature in the centre of the cover. or part of the title text. A roman design is all i can imagine for this, but there may be other styles available. Audience: The audience I am aiming at is young adult or adult readers. People that are interested in the supernatural, mysteries and action will hopefully find this story appealing. The previous competition I hosted on here will give some indication of the style I like. But id like a completely different cover design, seeing this book is not directly linked to the previous book, it is a side story set in the same world. Colours: for the colours of the cover I’d like something either very dark and foreboding or something simple and silhouetted in a modern classic style. Even a comic style could be effective . I am looking to create another cover in the next few months for another side story so the successful designer could expect another gig in the next few months. Notes: other covers that i really like the look of for ideas- Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series, Stephen Hunt's Court of the Air series, Raymond E. Fiest's Conclave of Shadows, Chuck Palahniuk's books (Survivor, Choke, Pygmy), Ben Langdon's The Miranda Contract, Hugh Howly's Wool, the Twighlight series (they were good covers), Mattew Reilly's books, Cormac McCarthy's The Road, Neil Gaiman's American Gods, Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games. Basic Details: Title: Jack Lorde (in a strong font). Author: Thurston Bassett Publisher Details: Kalamity Press. I've attached the files for the logo which would be good to see on the back cover and a small version on the spine - if it fits your design of course. If it clashes, happy to leave it off. Thanks, and please let me know if you have any questions.
