I'm looking for simple, modern, and luxurious for sure, but it could either be playful or serious. I'm torn between the two so I'm very open to different options. I started one myself (see images) and wouldn't mind seeing some "safe" options that are similar but a little more dressed up (like the American Wit image) but really the point of opening up the competition is to see if someone can make an abstract/whimsical cover that jumps out to me and more closely matches the tone of the book. So have fun!
I do have the rights to the watercolor images below but they are not mandatory to use. In fact, they may appear on the inside of the book if the cover is different but consistent with their style.
Here are a few lines to get a sense of the tone (and also they could appear on the inside flaps of the jacket, just a thought).
"Then beholden to some unknown need,
That devilish bird deposited the seed.
That rascal! That rogue! That black-headed fiend!
He took the last piece of fruit to make it green.
To grow, to sprout,
To live a life making more fruit come about.
But he didn’t linger. He didn’t chat.
He flew away and that was that. "
"So slowly ceding time’s crescendo,
Catherine stared out the open window.
So bright! So brazen! So very blue!
So much so that she wondered at the wondrous hue.
Anything seemed possible. Anything seemed sane.
Anything, that is, but a driving rain.
For on that day, and on that hour.
All she could think was did it flower?"
Hopefully that helps. Further in the book it gets a little more melancholy so the cover could take a more dreamlike/ethereal direction too. Also, I didn't find a good fig watercolor but it could go down the route of fig branches and leaves wrapping front to back. Or it could be the silhouette of a girl in front of a window. Basically, I'm open to options. As long as it includes either a ruby throat hummingbird, parts of a fig tree, or a girl staring out a city window (or all of the above). So again, have fun!
