The book is for readers who like dark, gritty science fiction. Dystopia, galactic empire. Think Altered Carbon. Think Blade Runner.
¿Cuál es tu visión?
I'm looking for a custom illustration for the first cover in a series of 5 books, with additional 1:1 projects to finish up the series. We originally had stock-based covers featuring spaceships when we considered the series space opera, but now we've realized that the series is more galactic empire with strong dystopian themes. The series is fundamentally about a rebellious woman who tries to overthrow the societal rules left behind by a totalitarian religious regime that disappeared hundreds of years ago. Now we want the cover illustrations to focus on that woman, her struggle, and the society she's trying to free. I have a concrete idea for the scene to portray on first one, but I'll be looking for someone who can also work from lighter direction and come up with strong images based on a few rough descriptions. How well you respond to feedback and how quickly you iterate concepts (even in a rough state) will be part of what determines the winner as much as how well your finished products come out. STYLE: Custom illustration. The illustration can have a foundation of a 3D rendering, but should not LOOK 3D, should look like concept art. Here are some inspirational covers that convey the vibe and the level of "concept art" finishing I'm looking for: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D9Z8SK7/ https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I0RC8HI/ https://www.amazon.com/Dawn-Arrives-Second-Dark-Ages-ebook/dp/B079T5X1DT/ https://www.amazon.com/Protracted-Game-Web-Serial-ebook/dp/B0868WJVPS https://www.amazon.com/COBRA-Files-book-Spirit-Ancients-ebook/dp/B088KTGYD1/ THE SCENE: The city in the background is one of several on a smog/ash-covered former prison colony. So it's not destroyed, like in a post-apocalyptic scene, but it's old and poorly-maintained. And everything is covered in grime--soot, rust, flickering neon. (I've included some passages from the text below.) Skyscrapers in the background. A city that's never fully daylight. Skies always have thunder and lightning storm, even if they're not immediately overhead causing rain. But rain would be fine, if you like the effect. The main focus is on the outside of a doorway where we see our main character (a woman) walking into a building in an area of seedy shops. The doorway acts as an airlock to keep the polluted outside air from inside the building, so we see the shimmer of a forcefield on the outer part of the doorway. Just enough that we know it's there, but not enough to obscure the woman in the airlock. Door is showing indicator lighting that it's safe to breathe. Since we're outside looking in, we see the woman from the back, brown hair to half-way down her back, wearing a black leather jacket and black pants. She's dangling a breather mask, the kind that covers nose and mouth, but not full face, at her side now that the forcefield makes it safe to breathe. Her head is turned over her other shoulder, watching behind her. (Because yes, she's always being followed.)
SCENE FLEXIBILITY: I see this as a single, composed scene, but if you were interested in doing more of a composition that represented both overview of city + close-up of character vignette like the "Protracted Game" cover from the inspiration images, I'd certainly be fine seeing creative interpretation. Just make sure you consider how a composition would extend to the full wrap-around of both paperback and eventually hardcovers. LAYOUT: I'm not necessarily looking for someone to redo typography--this is, essentially, an illustration contest. If you choose to skip introducing new typography, just make sure you can work our existing typography into the illustration. You can download the layered source file for our existing paperback cover here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/pogn9cz5e6iymk9/01Echoesofangels-prints.psd?dl=0 SNIPPETS FROM TEXT: "Through the smudged window, he saw a bleak, barren world awash in sin that it wallowed in rather than seeking redemption. Other prison worlds left by the angels had taken centuries to repent, scions taking heed of the errors of their ancestors and embracing the message of the Codex. Not Gehenna. A red indicator light above the passenger door blinked to green. In unpracticed unison, Jeremiah and his six colleagues pulled on their masks. A filter covered the wearer’s nose and mouth, separating the foul pollutants and dust from breathable air." "The toxic clouds and ash grew so thick, the woman was flying purely by scanners. Rachel couldn’t see a damned thing out the window, except the occasional crackle of lightning. This place really did look like some Codex-inspired version of hell. And here she was, asking to be dropped off at the place. She could have said one word and David would have flown her back to imperial space." "The smell hit her like a wave. Gehenna stank. The breather Rachel suctioned over her face allowed her to survive the planet’s sulfuric vapors and toxic atmosphere, but it didn’t quite cut out the smell—a blend of rotten eggs and a chemistry lab. This place had once been a penal colony for those who offended the angels. Had they not vanished six centuries ago, Rachel herself might have wound up in such a toxic waste." "Gehenna—an ash world located in the Pegasus Dwarf Galaxy, near the Expanse of Nod. Established as a penal colony by the angels in the year 2077 EY, under the wardenship of the angel Raziel . Following the Vanishing, the planet fell into chaos. From this chaos rose a faceless oligarchy calling themselves the Shadow Council—a secretive cabal that enforced rule of this planet through assassins called the Gibborim ." "The Babel Bazaar was famous, or perhaps infamous, as an underground hangout for all walks of life. The entrance, just ahead, looked like a many-tiered spire. It might have seemed tall, if not for the buildings around it. The soot-colored skyscrapers rimming the street stretched a hundred or more stories up, shadowing the already dark streets."
