We would like you to design a 12" x 18" placemat for kids to use at the dinner table.
Theme is: "I'm a Food Scientist"
We are encouraging children to use their 5 senses to test the foods. Here are some ideas:
See: big or small, identify color, shape, length, etc
Hear: (what do you hear when you eat it?) crunchy, chewy, mushy, bubbly, etc
Smell: Spicy, sweet, fruity, meaty, fishy, stinky, etc
Taste: hot & spicy, sweet, sour, salty, juicy, fruity, etc
Touch: gooey, hot, sticky, soft, hard, cold, creamy, hot cold, crumbly, crispy, etc
The mat should be VERY VISUAL for young children and early readers (ages 3-10). Try to find ways to ILLUSTRATE the different testing methods/experiments with visuals, instead of using too many words. It is best to design this mat for VERY early readers, IF they can read at all.
Here are some ideas/suggestions:
See: could include colors icons, shapes to choose from, a small ruler to measure length), etc.
Taste: pictures to match descriptions
True/False list (It is Gooey? T/F)
You can have them rate various elements with a happy face, sad face or straight-face.
Would enjoy seeing an overall star rating for them to select (scale showing they don't love it for 1 star, and love it for 5 stars).
There could be additional fill-in-the blank suggestions like "I could make it healthier by..." or "I like it because..."
Please keep in mind that their plate or food will sit in the center of the mat. It would be nice to have a central circle/plate with divided sections labeled as fruits, grains, vegetables and protein. Can they identify which sections the food belongs in?
The mat should be very visual, colorful, and exciting for children to look at. It should inspire them to try new foods and identify the features of the 5 senses!
