The aim of this infographic is to highlight the small impact that the Australian Carbon tax had on inflation after it came into effect.
Prior to the carbon tax and in the time after the tax came into effect there has been a lot of attention given to the impact of the tax on the cost of living in Australia
The aim of this infographic is to put the impact of the carbon tax into context through comparing it to the last major Australian tax, the GST. The data that will be used in this infographic shows that the carbon tax did not have a major impact on inflation in Australia.
The GST came in on 1 July 2000 while the Carbon tax came in on 1 July 2012. The attached graph shows the quarterly inflation figures after those events as well as the 10 years (moving average) inflation data before each event. So far there are only three observations since July 2012. The attached graph should be the focus of the infographic.
The infographic should draw special attention to the small impact of the carbon tax compared to the GST.
This infographic will be released on the first anniversary of the carbon tax so it should have a line in it saying something like ‘one year on and the carbon tax is still not a big deal’.
