We are looking for a strong graphic concept for the book "Psycho" by Robert Bloch. It should represent themes, characters or events from the book in a strong, silhouette style. You should definitely AVOID anything that's identifiably from the Hitchcock film of the same name, and its marketing materials.
We are prepared to use some colour but it should add something that mere silhouette cannot. We don't want to just colour in part of something which actually works in black and white. Be wary, too, of using too much detail as the spaces between the words and paragraphs will scramble your image outlines a little and make intricate shapes indistinct or unclear. Browse our website to get an idea of the sort of broad shapes which work best.
Some other guidelines:
Generally, if you need thin lines, they should be straight and horizontal. Curved and/or vertical thin lines will be hard to implement without scrambling the text and/or breaking up columns.
Make use of the silhouette style, don't fight it. Our "Clockwork Orange" design is an excellent example of this - the shirt, glass, milk and background work together without requiring a third colour.
Less is more. A clever concept done simply is ten times as powerful as an intricate design that shows off your amazing detailing skills.
If you want to make the title central to your design that's fine. It will almost certainly be incorporated into the design somehow anyway.
PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT CONCEPTS THAT LOOK LIKE THE FINISHED ITEM.
We want to see your shapes as plain vector art, not what the finished product will look like. The positions of dialogue, chapter headings and suchlike mean the precise implementation of your concept will happen at our end. Don't make extra work for yourself! Just send over your best ideas.
