ARGO, a software project currently under development by The Baffler, is an infrastructure that centralizes many of the analytics and management tasks of magazine publishing. Through the creation of a dashboard with a sophisticated backend, publishers and their marketing, sales, and support staff will be able to compare diverse live datastreams and manipulate existing databases with the use of APIs, while offering their editorial team a comprehensive publishing manager for budgeting and scheduling each step of the content creation process. Bringing together customizable data streams including warehouse inventory numbers, subscriber lists, marketing email schedules, and ROI data for everything from advertising campaigns to subscriber acquisition, with editorial functions and analytics, ARGO will enable users to simplify complex data, reveal patterns, and generate accurate and digestible infometrics to improve their work-flow and make much more informed decisions. Many small or medium independent magazines already have some version of a database management system, but no platform exists with this level of sophistication, customizable to each magazine’s organization with the deliberate, targeted goal of keeping our publications viable beside the larger resources of corporate journalism. The digital era has been a mixed blessing for readers and publishing alike, but the web does offer a clear opportunity in streamlining the logistic hurdles of running a small magazine—an opportunity that remains unrealized. Audience development, circulation management, magazine marketing, and editorial budgeting are sometimes tedious tasks that require similar approaches within all publications. Yet today, indie magazines must manage these processes through a patchwork of software applications each dedicated to one or two functions—and none of these applications have been designed with magazines in mind. The biggest media conglomerates—Conde Nast, Hearst, Rodale, etc.—use proprietary software well outside the reach of small and medium organizations. Publishing consultants and vendors are mired in dated, arcane systems developed a time when readers selected from fewer magazine titles who each had larger reach. No single platform exists today where a magazine team can view all their data in one place. Once information about readers, supporters, and contributors is all in one place, decisions at all levels of a magazine become better-informed. ARGO offers many specific use cases, such as: —An editor wants to know what contributors are most likely to lead readers to subscribe to the magazine —A managing editor wants to know how much of an editorial budget is committed, and which editors extended those commissions —A marketer wants to know what individual contacts are in a particular city, so they can promote an event —A circulation manager wants to know which promotions are drawing in new subscribers —A publisher wants to see how they can reallocate budgets to free up funds for an unexpected expense —A social media team wants to know which stories are shared most often —A development person wants to see how many existing subscribers are donor prospect ARGO is hosted entirely on web servers and end users interact with it like any other web page. Licenses will be sold as a recurring subscription on a per-organization basis. Unlimited logins will be allowed within individual companies, which will also allow its affordability for the smaller budgets of non-profit and independent magazines, as well.
