Greetings everyone in the name of Rock N Roll! We are Johnny Hart and the Mess. We’re an original alternative/blues/rock band from Buffalo, NY USA. We’re a group of laid back, fun loving guys that are very passionate about what we do with our music. We dedicate endless hours weekly perfecting songs and preparing to go into the studio to record our new album in April of this year. Our influences extend far and wide across the musical spectrum and we perform a vast mix of sounds in our own music. Our influences range from blues to soul, to bluegrass and funk, Motown and rockabilly and of course any shape or form of rock n roll.
Johnny started a project in 2013 where he set out to explore many different types of sounds. After a year or more of work, Johnny released an album. It had songs that spanned across many different genres, cultures and themes. When he finished this album, he didn’t know what to call the project until working on editing a track one day. He hit a block in the mixing portion and just sat back in his chair and said “how can this work, this is a mess”. Then like the immaculate conception, Johnny Hart and the Mess was born.
Although this was a very eye opening and enjoyable experience for Johnny, he missed the authenticity of the human element in music. Having grown up playing in a band for over ten years, Johnny quickly reverted back in search of new band mates to bring this concept to a whole new level. The intention of a band was to begin performing out again, interacting with crowds and hopefully making a record down the line.
Insert Tyler. Johnny had posted an ad on Craigslist in 2015 listing a variety of influences and the type of project he was interested in pursuing. One day, Johnny received a message from Tyler and the two began to talk. They soon realized how many similarities they had and there was an instant connection. Over the next several months while searching for other band members, Johnny and Tyler started writing music together.
Insert Kooks. Tyler had mentioned to Johnny that he ran into an old friend, Kooks. Kooks played drums and expressed that he would be interested in meeting up with the guys to see what they were doing. After many get togethers, rehearsals, talks and hanging out, the band was born. The Mess was alive. Kooks was the perfect fit for the group and soon Johnny Hart and the Mess went from a computer generated music project to a full on rock n roll band.
To this day, the band does not have a permanent bass player. They work with a variety of bassists to sit in on writing sessions and live performances. It leaves an element of surprise, unknowing and diversity in the music every time the band performs. It challenges the group to never be fully comfortable with each other. They always have to be on top of their game and prepared for whatever the show has in store for them and whatever the crowd fuels them with.
What we are trying to find now is an identity. The one logo that people will see and know it is Johnny Hart and the Mess. We want our Rolling Stones Tongue out logo. We love classic rock and roll designs. While we realize the logo will be Black and White, we have intentions of using a wide variety of colors in the future with this design. We plan on using the logo on the upcoming album artwork, posters, stickers, Drum heads, shirts and much more.
Trying to capture the essence of a band in just words is pretty difficult. So if you go onto our website http://www.johnnyhartandthemess.com you can listen to a few live tracks we have up there of our latest work. The songs are “I’m Gone”, “Ride This Out” and “Blueberry Tree”. We tell a lot of stories in our music and we have a lot of characters. You’ll also be able to see pictures of us and see the running joke of Johnny having short hair and the Mess all has long hair. There are also a few videos of live performances on the site as well.
We’re very excited to see all of your creations! Thanks for your time and efforts. We truly appreciate you being a part of our creative journey. Cheers!
