Meditation can have an amazing impact on an individual's life; however, many are turned off by the word "meditation" for its yogi, guru worshiping connotations. It's difficult for many people immersed in the Western way of life to comprehend sitting for a period of time and having "no thoughts." SSM wants to change people's perception on meditation. It doesn't have to be serious, but rather, it can be fun, playful, and innovative. We want to help people realize that they can access mindful awareness in any and all of their daily activities, from walking the dog to doing the dishes, from sitting in traffic to grocery shopping, and, of course, from surfing to skateboarding. Specifically we feel that action sports like surfing, skateboarding, and others are active forms of meditation. It is meditation through movement. They take you out of the craziness of your mind and put you in this moment, in the present. Surfers, skaters, and meditators alike have a unique opportunity to come together and share this practice and mind set with the most diverse communities. We must first come together in order to grow together.
