We're a pretty standard coffee shop - nothing too formal, but not too relaxed. We'll have a fairly wide variety of customers and uses, so we're pretty hesitant to do anything too stylized - we're not really looking to be edgy or complex.
We'd prefer something primarily text based, with a coffee-related abstract/pictorial complement. Because we're looking to put this on t-shirts and/or aprons, we're thinking it might be good if the logo is (or looks good) flat/in negative form. Legibility is important.
The words "By the" in the name are used because of the coffee shop's immediate proximity to a nearly 25 year-old retail/flavored whole-bean store named "Beans & Such" - having a coffee bean next to the words "By the Bean" is a fairly straight-forward concept we've considered, and may like if done well, but is not something we're by any means limited to. Other ideas/concepts are more than welcome.
While I'm not particularly looking for an emblem-type logo, I'm open to anything that looks good - if additional text is needed to make this look better, incorporating the town name is not something I'm against - Lincoln, Illinois.
