Hokulea is the brightest star in the Northern Hemisphere. It also means star of "gladness" or "joy" in the Hawaiian language and was used by the crew of the Hokulea outrigger to help guide their way around their multi-year journeys circumnavigating the Pacific Ocean and ultimately home to Hawaii. I grew up in Hawaii so Hokulea has significance for me. Please see the included images, sketches (from my kids :), and doc with links that can provide inspiration. I'm particularly interested in including a light spark element that expands to the right as well as the concept of "guiding home."
Important / additional clarification!
The half circle / circle component of the included images should be the focal point and anchor of the logo. I envision movement with lines into or out of the half circle / circle. Said another way, I included background on the Hokulea outrigger for context, but there should be less of a literal representation of the Hokulea outrigger canoe meaning and more of a focus on the spark anchor and possibilities.
The movement is in the spark element and I’m interested in it looking a bit organic as in the photos. In addition, while I like the concept of “fluidity” and movement, I don’t want it to appear too “soft.”
I am looking for something that is simple yet elegant, clean, timeless, and not too fussy. I want a logo that is horizontal in nature (wider than it is tall), with a ratio of approximately 3:1 (so for example, on a website it might be about 300px wide x 100px tall). I'm flexible on this, but that's the general shape I'm going for.
I’m open to your font ideas, but I think a sans serif font will work best. Please make “HOKULEA” all caps. “Coaching” can be upper or mixed case. Make “Hokulea” larger than “Coaching” and if they are stacked with Hokulea on top, you can use kerning or graphic embellishment to make the second row as wide as the top row.
This is how I am going to rate the designs during this first phase. Early on, I probably won't rate anything 4 or 5 stars, until I have seen a substantial number of designs and can make a good decision.
(1*) - Thank You for your proposal but not what I’m looking for.
(2*) - Nice idea concept but wrong direction.
(3*) - Please make some changes, I like your style.
(4*) - Excellent proposal, could be considered as a finalist.
(5*) - In the final round.
Don't be disappointed if your initial design does not immediately get 4 or 5 stars, I won't give those right away, because I am counting on revisions being made from initial designs.
When we get to the final round, I will ask to see all designs in color, black and white, grayscale, and reverse (white over black). You don't need to provide those now, just know that we will ask for them, so your design needs to look good in all 4 formats.
