Edge Consortium is a US based non-profit organization comprised of dozens of industry executives from the Internet content sector (think Yahoo/Facebook) and the Internet Network Operator sector (think Comcast/CenturyLink). All members of the organization have an interest in making the Internet function better. With the advent of video on the Internet and other incredibly bandwidth intensive applications, one of the primary ways to make the Internet function better is to push more content to the edge of the network. In layman's terms, put Internet content physically closer to the user — out the content "on the Edge of the Network." This takes collaboration and cooperation from several participants in Internet infrastructure – principally those that create and distribute the content and those that have networks that contain the users that consume the content. The Edge Consortium has been created to offer a platform for the collaboration and social networking necessary to solve challenges and create innovation.
Think: High Tech – Internet – Content (Video) – Speed/Latency
Most of the members are Director or VP level network engineer execs with a strong technical pedigree (electrical engineers, master's of science).
